Destroyer Overview Symbols

When using my default overview settings, NPC destroyers are shown with the frigate-sized "small red cross" overview symbol, whereas player-controlled destroyers are represented by cruiser-sized brackets. Is there a reason for this inconsistency, or do I just have a corrupt file or something?

I thought there were only 3 sizes of symbols for NPC ships? small/middle/large crosses ?

and afaik, npc battlecruisers use the cruiser symbol as well.

Thanks, GazBoi; while I had no intention of panicing, it *is* good to know that this is normal.

Synthetic, afaik you are correct: there *are* only three sizes of NPC crosses, and NPC BCs *do* use the mid-sized symbol.

But that's kind of my point. BCs are cruiser-sized hulls. They use medium-sized weapon systems and medium-sized rigs. It makes sense that they would be represented by medium (cruiser) sized symbols. Destroyers, on the other hand, are frigate-sized hulls. They use small-sized weapon systems and small-sized rigs. It makes sense that they would be represented by small (frigate) sized symbols...but this is currently only true in the case of NPC ships; the player-controlled destroyers use the medium symbols for some reason. I'm just curious what that reason is.

until fairly recently, destroyers had a pretty big signature radius, which was a lot closer to a cruiser than a frigate.

like, Coercer had a sig radius of something like 80m, and it would get hit hard by cruiser guns.

So, could be something to do with that, or maybe just like the npcs, there's only a few symbols available for the overview.

being able to change what symbols were what on overview would be interesting, I think.

Oh, so you think maybe it has more to do with sig radius size than hull class? Player ships under, say, 60m SR get the frigate brackets, ships over 275m SR get the battleship brackets, and all else get the cruiser brackets? That's an interesting viewpoint; thanks, Synthetic.

No, because then a heavily shield rigged BC using a MWD would be using a battleship bracket due to massive sig radius.

In game not really, cruisers tend to be around the 150,000 m3 mark and BC more like 250.000 so in EVE the BC are in between cruisers and battleships.

Of course in terms of real world ocean going navies EVE has it all wrong. The Battlecruiser was basically a Battleship sized hull fitted with less armor and sometimes smaller guns to give it a bit more speed and manouverability.

Thank you all for your input; the more we talk about this, the more I think I'd like to know the "real" answer.

So it's clearly not a dynamically determined value, and probably not even an "on undock" snapshot value, either.

Yes, BCs are a bit in-between cruisers and BSs, just as Dessies are in-between frigates and cruisers, but neither have their own Overview symbols; as such, I'd presumed they are portrayed using the icons of their base hull classes. Using base Signature Radius rather than base hull class is a very interesting angle, and one I'd not considered initially, but that theory still doesn't address my original question.

Why the inconsistency in Destroyer Icons?

Again, BCs use medium (cruiser-class) weapon systems and medium (cruiser-class) rigs; NPC BCs are represented by medium (cruiser-class) crosses, and player BCs by medium (cruiser-class) brackets. That's all very consistent.
Destroyers use small (frigate-class) weapon systems and small (frigate-class) rigs; NPC Dessies are represented by small (frigate-class) crosses...why then are player Dessies represented by medium (cruiser-class) brackets?

This is GD. A hentai threadjack is just business as usual, Julian.

Fair enough :)

Still, GD seemed the best option; my question didn't really seem to fit under ship discussion, or technology...
I guess we'll stick with this...at least until the tentacle launchers come out in the Rubicon point release ;)
