Looking for experienced Python programmer

Hello folks

I reached out to my company’s resident programmer to see if he had any resources I could use to learn VBA code for Excel, and he convinced me to learn Python instead of VBA. I started dabbling in Python today via http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Non-Programmer's_Tutorial_for_Python_3.0, and so far, I’m really enjoying this. I was concerned about not understanding what was going on and getting frustrated, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that a lot of this looks similar to the way things work in excel formulas, thus, I’m not completely lost when looking at code. I freaking love excel! I don’t know what the heck I’m doing, but it doesn’t look all that foreign, if that makes any sense. I’m working my way through that tutorial, and will be moving on from there. It took me an hour to create functioning log on credentials, but man was I proud when I accomplished that!

The reason I’m reaching out to you folks is that this is the first bit of programming I’ve ever done, and I’m sure I’m going get stumped. I don’t want to go back to our resident programmer, as he’s one of the owner’s sons, and I’m one of only a handful of managers in our nation-wide company. Even though programming has absolutely nothing to do with my job, I don’t want to go to one of the owners sons and look like an incompetent dweeb. There’s no telling what gets brought up around the Sunday dinner table. I’m looking for an experienced Python user that would be willing to answer my questions as they arise. Sometimes it’s just easier to talk something out via voice comms than trying to figure out the proper wording for a Google search, and they trying to decipher someone else’s writing.

Hopefully one of you generous souls will be willing to let me send you some code I’m struggling with from time to time, and have you help me figure out where I’m going wrong. Right now, I’ve got nothing to send, but I’m also in the very early stages of learning this nonsense.

Thanks for your time!

It's not voice comms, but you're more likely to find the right kind of help on the mailing lists here: https://wiki.python.org/moin/BeginnersGuide/Help

Also, for interactive tutorials: http://www.codecademy.com/tracks/python I've gone through some of their other stuff and it was fairly good.

But in purple, I'm stunning!

I find it odd that Python would be better than VBA at writing functions for Excel/Word.

In my somewhat related experience, I found that when writing programs that manipulated Excel/Word via COM, VB.Net > Perl >> Python. Python's COM support was a bit... iffy/quirky at times. (This was with Python 2.x.)
