Hello all,
My friends want me to start roaming with them in frigates. They have given me 40+ Kestrels and asked me to kite. Thing is I do not know how to kite, nor do I know how to fit a kiting ship. I was wondering if someone could help me with a starting Kite fit so I have a base to work off of. I plan to roam with them and maybe do some solo just to get experience. When I'm roaming with them they said I wouldn't have to worry about adding Web or Warp scramblers. But I know I will have to use them for solo. Also, I don't know what type of ammo to use. If it matters they roam around Amarr space.

Thanks

I'd probably experiment with something like this.

[Kestrel, Kiter]
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II

Limited 1MN Microwarpdrive I
1MN Afterburner II
F-90 Positional Sensor Subroutines, Targeting Range Script
Low Frequency Sensor Suppressor I, Targeting Range Dampening Script

Limited 'Limos' Light Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Inferno Light Missile
Limited 'Limos' Light Missile Launcher, Caldari Navy Inferno Light Missile

Small Hydraulic Bay Thrusters I

Small Rocket Fuel Cache Partition I

If you have problems with CPU, you can replace one of the BCUs with something else.

I haven't flown the Kestrel myself, but I've flown -against- them a lot in blaster frigs. They are pretty fragile without a Medium Shield Extender or Booster. Also, the range-dampening fit above would be useless against brawlers, since they have to get right upon you to do damage anyway. If you know you don't have to worry about tackle, I'd trade the AB for an MSE and the damp for an Adaptive Invulnerability Field, and go for tracking disrupt rather than range.

With 40 hulls to work with, you have lots of room for trial by error. Someone graciously gave me 50 Atrons for the same reason, and I started winning 1v1s after about 30 of them sploded... Happy hunting!

Well don't then. Get something you already know how to use? 40+ kestrels may seem like a lot, but without the rigs, their just a cheap pile of hulls... maybe they had bad luck trying to sell them off hehe.

If you are low SP though, kestrel is pretty nice ...at least for pve as far as I know, just load with missiles and something to propel you a bit faster, and a BCS or two, and probably a shield booster yes. I've never took a kestrel into pvp, haven't flown a kestrel for years since when I was a newbie (but frigs I still fly). If you have a little skill, or looking for skill direction, I'd probably trade the Kestrels in on a pile of Griffins, those are really nice in gangs imo, even solo. hah and you won't have a problem kiting them, you may make for a good primary target to chase down.

Kiting principle: basically when engaged, you run away while you keep fighting. So you want some speed, range targeting and then some weapon power. In missile boats, you don't have an optimal target range, so pretty good for always at odd distances from the target.

The difference between the kestrel and the griffin is that the kestrel has more missile hard points while the griffin has a bonus for jamming so your targets cant fight. Once you jam them, you get their attention, they hate your guts. If you have no jamming skill at all, then start with the kestrel to get your core skills up some and then raise your ewar as secondary, if it's something that interests you anyway. If you are not sure, search through youtube for some videos, lots of them there. Oh and similarity between the two they can both perform the basic kiting principle.

I mention griffin because missiles have been a bit nerfed. I think rockets are still good, but then you don't usually use rockets for much ranged fighting. So for me, knowing what I know, if I were just starting out, I'd maybe fly something else rather than missile boats. But in the case of ECM boats, they are more than just missiles so justify training missiles which I'd still do the same as I did regarding training. Such as the griffin, kitsune, blackbird, scorpion, rook, falcon, widow. Though pure missile boats are still not so bad, the CNR is imo still a solid battleship platform to work towards, though more so for mission running due to the hefty cost, but which well funds your ewar ships.
