greets!

logged onto forum, here, and was greeted with "jane minmatrian" has added you as a contact.

so...
1 - what does that mean - can it hurt me or my gameplay?
2 - when i click on the name, "jane" let's say, it says "add as contact" and has several levels to choose from - can that hurt me or my gameplay?

rsvp & thx in advance!

No. Contacts and their standings have no functional purpose within the game's mechanics. It is purely informational.

The only notable thing is that if you add a contact and put them on your "watchlist", you will be able to see if they're online or not, but other than that there's nothing.

1. No. The only way it can "hurt" your gameplay is that the other party has also added you their watchlist and thus can see if you are online or offline. The notification isn't even mandatory and people can add you to their contact list without alerting you in the first place.

2. No. It can affect your gameplay in a very minor way (though not in a negative way). When you set people to good (light blue +) or excellent (dark blue +) standings and then make a fleet advert, you can make is so they can find the fleet in their fleet finder.

Same counts for certain POS related things, which will be usable if you set people/corps/alliances to good or excellent standings.

The 2 negative standings (orange - and red -) are great for for instance wartargets. This way you can check who is online (in combination with your watchlist) and if they are in system with you, you can easily spot people (by the standing icon in local-chat).

tl:dr = No. Adding people to your contact list or being on someone's contact list yourself doesn't hurt you or affect you in game in a very major way (and if it does, it's in a positive way).

Contacts do not directly affect gameplay, unless you choose to contact them. It's a good way to watch out for and keep track of friends. Tactically, it can be used to identify danger when specific enemies are online if you add them to watch list. I've used this before when i was being hunted by the same charecter for a week. The watch list alerted me to hide when the hunter was online. Unfortunatly, it can also be used vice versa.
