Skill training

So I was wondering, should I just follow the certificates for a given ship? It seems to be a no brainer, but I'd like some feedback as to whether following certificate paths for ships is a good idea.

So far I am following them, mostly because it gives me a structured form to skill training.

Install evemon, set a goal, train everything that helps in using that goal.

Yeah, I use evemon to get the list of the certificates into one nice easy place to read, you did not answer my question.

Its a good idea, but also need alot more other skills as well. Usually there are alot of general skills that help all ships out, then esoteric ones just for that ship and its design or so.

So a mix of different certifications would be the best route. I did notice some certifications have skills that do not relate directly with an armor type tanking ship or even with the Amarr's Laser specialization on their ships.

Certificates are a decent guideline, but besides the ship certificate don't forget your drone skills, and a good goal to go for is getting the Core Competency certificate up to atleast standard as those are skills that will help all the ships you fly (fitting, capacitor, navigation, targeting etc)

I'd say certs are a good starting point until you know what skills will help your flying style. IE the rifter calls for core, armour and frig turret control. It doesn't say anything about having skills for tackle for PVP, salvagering for PvE, or the fact that the rifter can make an ok low level explorer.

Use the certs listed to start with but look at what you actually plan to do with the ship and look through the cert planner for further ideas.

Certificates are, as stated above, a good guidelines and starting point. In evemon you can also look at items you plan/want to use and see what skills are needed to use it and even if no certs lists it as needed to fly a ship you will know that you have to train that skill.

This is what I am currently doing. Got couple of basic certificates recommended for a rifter but since I want to fit it with t2 modules I checked what skills I am missing and added them to my plan.

Another thing is that I also trained a lot of not needed skills at this moment but that is a beauty of browsing skills sorted by a "time to next level" :)

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I'm first heading to destroyers, then cruisers then the bc. After that, probably work on scanning skills.

I would train all of the skills below to level 3 as they will help no matter what you plan on flying. Once you have them to level 3 train drone and gunnery or missile skills to level 3. Then before you fly T2 ships train all the skills below to level 5 except repair systems.

Engineering - Power Core
Electronics - CPU
Energy Management - Capacitor Capacity.
Energy Systems Operation - Capacitor Recharge
Energy Grid Upgrades - to reduce the CPU requirements of installing power modules.
Mechanic - Hull Strength.
Navigation - Ship Velocity
Shield Management - Shield Capacity.
Shield Operation - Shield Recharge
Spaceship Command - Improved Ship Agility
Hull Upgrade - Armor Strength.
Repair Systems - armor repair modules.

Until you understand what you want to do in EVE and how to get there, following the recommended certificates is not the worst thing you could do.

Once you know where you are going - just ignore the certificates altogether.

Sir, let me introduce you to the zero-brainer approach:

1) Load into EFT your favorite fit in your favorite ship
2) Check which skills make your ship pwn/tank/whatever more
3) Train those skills to desired level.
4) Load another favorite boat of yours into EFT, rinse, repeat.

Thanks, that ranks right up there with probably the best advice I've seen. The other responses were great too, thank guys. I am now educated as to how and what to train for. I appreciate it your help, and the help you provided to the others reading the post wondering what they needed to train (not like they couldn't search for it... as I should have...).
