When you feel you need them or when it would be a benefit to have them trained.

When you have the relevant support skills. This could be 40mil sp. It could be 100...

I hit the 40m SP long ago and was faced with this issue as well. Eventually I decided against it. Really in order for most people to be successful in a capital you have to have other player support. Also another thing you need to consider is the risk/isk factor, Capitals are nice until you need to replace them... as a Capitalship producer (I started out indy and then went combat), I have a lot of repeated customers.

If you have the support and are able to bankroll the endeavor then I guess the only thing left to consider is time. How much of it you have to dedicate to being a capital pilot and deal with all of the issues of low/nullsec. It can pay off if you have time, money, and support, but lacking even one of these really puts you into a huge risk category.

Just my two isk.

If you have to ask, never. Capitals are more corp/alliance type of a ship and needs support.

Welcome to Eve. Everyone here is an Evil Sick Sadistic Bastard who is out to get you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to scam you or use you.

When youve run out of SUbcap ships you like to fly. Train caps.(if you think flying caps would be enjoyable)

This.

Unless you're in a corp/alliance that makes use of them, you're better off with just subcaps.

Using capitals is an incredibly niche area. Unless you have strong reasons to use them, don't bother. It also really depends on what area of space your going to be fighting in and what size gangs you will be fighting in.

There seems to be massively increasing trend of using Black Ops drops in low and NPC null. Probably because of the cyno jammer.

It's up to your play style. I've got no near term plans to train for capitals, and I'm at the 50m + skill points mark. I just don't see the point with all the shiny sub cap stuff to play with. Maybe once I've trained a few battleships to V, and have HACS and all the T3s trained up?

Don't listen to people. The earlier you start, the earlier you sit in one. Support skills are important, yes, but you can train them THEN too! Just don't forget to tell us when you're ready then we can gather up in lowsec and celebrate together!

Just remember that probably the most embarrassing thing you can do in Eve is lose your cap to a hot-drop whilst ratting in null.

Hmm, but it looks like subcaps will be old hat in Eve 2014. I don't want to be left behind when everyone else flies off in their naglfar.

Well, not wasted, but this. I trained really early and now I have excellent competencies in carriers and dreadnoughts that I neither use nor can afford.

Wait, which alt are we talking about?

At least one of them will never run out of subcap skills to train, so for him or her the answer is never. But...

When you realize you'll actually have use for them/become more valuable to your corp with them.

I was thinking the same but didn't want to sound like TOO much of the carebear that I often am.
