I love xp. It's been such a stable operating system that I didn't even consider Vista or Windows 7 when they came out. But, all good things must come to an end. I'm thinking about going to Windows 8.

I've heard a lot about the OS. Mainly, that it keeps to many apps running in the background. I would like to know more about that.

I would also like to use a desktop like I do for xp.

After Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, EVE is most important to me. I am concerned that EVE is so wedded to directx9 and that makes me hesitate to even go to Windows 8.

What have been your experience with going to Windows 8 with EVE? How much RAM do you recommend? Should I go to 64bit or 32 bit OS? (I do have a 64bit dual core processor).

How much are you jury rigging Windows 8 to run EVE? I've heard you can emulate xp and use direct 9, but CCP is talking about a direct x 11 client. I'm so confused, lol. Help!

Done my time in null sec, now I'm just a Privateer wandering around High and Low Sec.

Use Windows 7.

Windows 8 is for tablets.

Windows 8.1 isn't much better.

As above. Windows 8 is a tad bit too aggravating to use with a non-touch screen.

eve is already dx11

win8 isn't actually different than 7, i've used both. it just looks a little different. but win8 cuts some features so that microsoft can sell them in the premium version or sell them on the application webstore. for example, between win7 and 8 media player lost the capability to play dvds.

win8 plays eve with no problems.

oh, and for some reason you can't turn off wifi. you can only 'turn on aeroplane mode'. which turns off the wifi.

I have a touch screen ...

it is still aggravating to use.

What moron decided things like Skype should download by default as apps and always run FULL SCREEN even on a 27" monitor.

Windows 7

I have already removed windows 8 from 4 colleagues new laptops and PC as they hated it.

The only reason they bought new was their current items died. Dropping a laptop into the swimming pool being the funniest reason to have to get a new one Lol

Personally, after trying it during beta, I think windows 8 makes Windows ME and Vista look good it is that bad! Roll

I have been using windows 8.1, it is fantastic, you just have to learn to use it I guess, which to be honest is actually much less stressful than using windows 7, xp, vista, 2000, ME, 98, 95, 3.1, 2.1 or any linux... Seriously, windows key, learn to use it...

All those are on the famous MS down cycle where marketing men and accountants have had too much say :D

MS consumer OS over the years:

Windows 98SE -------> GOOD
Windows ME ~~~~~~~> BAD
Windows XP ---------> GOOD
Windows Vista ~~~~~~> BAD
Windows 7 ----------> GOOD
Windows 8 ~~~~~~~~~> BAD

See the pattern ???

Win8 is the new Vista is the new WinME.

As a PC user, I avoid Win8 because it forces clunky tablet features on what is supposed to be a desktop OS. I know I can "get around" those features, but why should I have to? Win7 does everything Win8 can do if you're a regular user/gamer anyway.

Quoted for truth, stick with 7 unless you own a tablet/touch enabled device, its just annoying otherwise

I built my computer, and than rebuilt it a few months ago both times using win7. And just ended up having to deal with a fresh pre-made HP which I am getting up and running properly right now, in fact I am in the process of stress testing the hardware after just removing the crapware and upgrading to win 8.1 from 8.

This is basically what I told my friend last night while working on win 8. "I am 100% certain the devil exists and walks among us. He works at Microsoft, there is no other way to explain how Metro got released. I can't think of a way to make it worse."

Windows 8 GUI is painful to say the least for the average user. To me where I am trying to do a lot more technical stuff it is downright cruel and unual punishment. Now toss in crapware into it and I am in hell. Windows 8.1 was a slight improvement but it still isn't even a polished turd, it's nice they added in a start button, but it leads back to freaking metro. And the entire experience feels like they are trying to sell you stuff on their store, or push worthless information. To be blunt the tiles look like what would happen if Facebook and an Ad company got together to try to create a "perfect" GUI. It's "pretty", useless, throws a lot of worthless information at you, and tries to sell you crap at the same time.

With that being said there are ways around the GUI which you can do, which I HIGHLY reccomend doing if you do get win8. They can give you back the win xp, vista, 7 GUI all of which are drastically better. I don't know the names of those programs offhand but a quick google search will get you the names or ask on a computer related forum such as Tomshardware.

Win 8 had some improvements over 7 such as faster boot times, increase security as well as a bunch of other small but worthwhile improvements. But all that is moot with how bad they killed the user experience.

If your willing to change the GUI go win8, if you want to keep the stock GUI go 7. 7 is also the least painful of the experiences and things are where you expect them to be and it overall feels far more refined in user experience. My personal preference I go with 7, and I skip 8 and see if they refine the GUI and make it worthwhile in 9.

Oh and go with 64bit OS, 32bit can't even read a full 4gb ram. And I recommend 8gb of ram for all gaming builds now days, preferably in dual channel. If you build your own PC I reccomend going on a computer forum like tomshardware and asking them for help so you have various people looking over your build. I am known to help people on that forum doing that when I get bored. And another website pcpartpicker will help you find deals and put pieces of the computer together easier, it just doesn't see all the combo deals on newegg I found so double checking for additional deals after you are close to finalizing your order is smart.

Welcome to Eve. Everyone here is an Evil Sick Sadistic Bastard who is out to get you. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either trying to scam you or use you.
