Welcome to the playgrounds.

All advice above is good. Just a few observations to add.
Knowing an area is huge. Tactics are different in different areas. So know thy opponent is huge. You'll start to notice very definite trends - like the constant booster, etc.

Expect initially to get schooled - it's a necessary step as you transition from a non-pvp high sec life. In addition, if you live in FW low, learn the plex mechanics - especially in regards to warping to fleet mates.

Finally stick 2 it and be persistent. Have the will to become successful low sec dwellers and go red flashy.

---Before even scouting/entering a low sec system, click on the Info button of said System, then check it's Sovereignty.

Not always helpful AFTER you jumped, but checking on the ship/pod kills from the last 24 hours will give you a slight boost in data and research while scouting.

---Always leave something comical or odd in your cargo, like 1 unit of Tobacco.
Why?
So when you get blasted by a T2 Cruiser, you can ask them for your smokes back, and it creates a hilarious window of opportunity.

Sounds cheesy, but hey, it worked for me and our conversation was memorable afterwards.

If you're lazy and smart, you'll set up clones in Hek, which is a trade hub and 0.5 system (meaning your sec has to take a pretty nasty dive before the empire cops shoot you) and then you're just two jumps from Resbroko which is the way in to the Amarr/Minmatar warzone (look on evemaps.dotlan.net for special FW maps) and then you just need to turn off your safety and click on everything that moves. I wouldn't bother reading up too much on mechanics and strategies because you'll forget it all in the heat of the moment anyway. Fly cheap stuff at first, take each loss with grace and eventually the mechanics just become second nature.

I feel ******* weird every time i'm on my hauler in high sec.. seriously being in high sec is really really weird.
So many players in high sec participating in the really boring parts of this game.... boggles the mind.

Good thing there's only one kind of bread, and soda, and beer, and car in this world!!

If you are fairly new to low-sec I have two pieces of advice:

1) Consider joining an alliance already positioned in low-sec.

or

2) Find some place quiet for your first move into low-sec. Most of the groups in active areas will rolfstomp you.

Move to Enaluri, it is the land of opportunity.
