Honest X-Rebirth review

After seeing such horrendous reviews on the game, I decided to hold off a bit and wait for some patches to release, at which point I would "acquire" it and try it myself. After "acquiring" it last night for a test run, I have to honestly say that I haven't had any problems whatsoever as far as crashes, sticking, etc. Everything works as it should, or at least it seems to so far after about 8 hours of play.

That said, I think mods will make this game better, not the devs. It's got some pretty crappy frame rates at times, but nothing unplayable. It is, however, about as user-friendly as a North Korean computer program, but I've found every single one of the X series to be like that. I think it's more of a design flaw than anything else: so many complicated menus for just stupid **** like seeing what's in your cargo hold or adding a weapons fitting screen. We can walk through stations (on a very limited scale, but still...) and talk to different people to hire as crew members for your fleets, but there's no loadout screen or cargo screen or anything like that. Everything has to be reached through a litany of menus, and as I said, it's just a design flaw because it works fine . It's just very...uh...German, I guess.

The concept is great, but it needs work. It's stable now, but it still has some small issues. It's a good holdover until Star Citizen and it's a really beautiful game. The stations and characters, unlike the space part of the game, are done pretty half ass and look like something out of a revamped Goldeneye, but it works and it's immersive enough. Does it warrant the 50 euro/dollar price tag? Absolutely not....but then again, that's never stopped gamers before.

All in all, give it a try. It's got some great, epic things about it and it's got some pretty crappy things about it too. It's no Freelancer as far as ease of play, but it's much more open and epic. I daresay that I like it. Will I drop it like a hot potato when Star Citizen comes out? Most probably as long as SC doesn't suck, but until then I'll keep playing.

There are mods that can save you from those station trips, and you can just talk with NPCs without even meeting them inside the station, like in eve online. The station trips are a ghastly experience.

Yeah but I like docking and leaving the ship and stuff. It's more immersive that way. It's also so poorly done it's hilarious, with voice acting just a notch above the Windows dictation program. It's like a B-movie that's so bad it's good.

There's just way too many design flaws in the game to make it enjoyable to play. If it was just the bad interface i'd be ok with it. I put 4 or 5 hours into it before I gave up and installed albion prelude again. Vastly superior game and vastly better graphics in my opinion. Rebirth kind of has a cartoon like feel too it which I didn't like. Huge disappointment

The x series are good for what they are .. I've enjoyed playing through all of them (don't have Rebirth yet though .. there will be a steam-sale at some point, and then that changes Big smile)

It's the modding community that makes them great games though.

Only... one... ship.

Be careful in Pulsar systems, you might get Pod Flu.
