in-game graphics layering?

Is there a way to adjust the layering of graphics when viewing with the camera in space? Instead of in space icons (like gates, planets, etc...) appearing on top of my spaceship, I'd like the spaceship to be on top of them (eclipse them?). It just seems strange having the icons appear on top... like they're closer than they should be... but likely this is my own weird depth perception problem...
