Destruction Derpy - Business Model "without direct source of income" questions

Hi all,

So for the past week or so I have been running a T1 frigate tourney under the name of Destruction Derpy. more info on that can be found here: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=3929679#post3929679

My question:
How can I keep on running this tourney for as long as possible, without asking for an entry fee from the competitors? I have enough to keep it up on my own for a while and I know that it won't last forever if I'm not gonna ask a fee, but its just too much fun to keep the minds away from "is this profitable?" and make it more about "is this fun with a bit of extra awesome?"

in other words,

How can you keep on giving away if you don't directly ask for anything in return? what indirect sources of income are imaginable in a case like this?

You can try and produce funny youtube videos or stream it on twitch. Then ask for ISK donations to keep it running.

Twitch is up and running. still need to work out a few decent marketing stunts to promote the thing, but that one is indeed noted.
thanks!

What about adding the possibility to bet on contestants? Could do on a match or tournament basis?

this is indeed a viable option. at the moment I am experimenting with this through EOH Brawl, however an independent system would probably work better (at the moment I receive no cut from the bets). this option will only be a serious one once I attract more people to the fights. at the moment, I have about 3 different rounds with 5-8 people per round per night. there are approx. 20 people in channel. my first quest would be to fill the channel up to about 50 people in channel and 8-16 contestants per fight. from there on I think betting would be a very decent option.

Ask for donations? If you provide something people enjoy and like, chances are they will help keep it going. But they need to know you'd like some help and providing help must be easy to do.

As mentioned, donations is one obvious possibility.

The other that comes to mind is finding a sponsor of some sorts, i.e. BIG, EOH, Somer, (big alliance name here), (filthy rich individual name here) ...

As we discussed the other day, if you go with the travelling circus idea or the other similar ideas, then you should be able to find sponsorship.

This is indeed one of the things I have to start putting some research into. Ideas are still sprouting left and right, but I reckon first thing, once again, is to grow a bit more popularity. that said, if any of the big rollers out there feel like theorycrafting a bit about weird PvP concepts, hit me up.

I see what you did there... Cool

Getting Brocked is a very legit event. Brocking is a strong act of social violence with interesting outcomes, not to be combined with narcotics or gleeful women.
Anyway...

Thanks for all the helpful comments around here so far. they all point in the same direction, namely the more people joining up, the higher the chance of sustainability will be. WTB a Marketing team Smile

I'd suggest start sending out probes to the larger entities that abound. Once you have the infrastructure to do betting especially. I'd imagine a number of entrepreneurs (read degenerate gamblers) would love a free mobile outlet for dog fighting. Which is basically what we are talking about.

Once that is in place rent out your services on a weekly basis to corps or month long to alliances/blocks. What you are "selling" is your willingness to manage the bracketing scheduling and other administrative minutia of setting up a small to mid size tourney and matches. Then you don't have to count on betting to fund you. You can use a "rake" off the betting to pay to a prize pool. This keeps the overhead relative to participation with a flat fee model.

Thats a very interesting perspective. I must admit, going on tour with this project is part of a bigger plan I'm working out (so many plans lol) but you are right, I should approach it as providing the needed logistics to set the tourney up. I shall (have to) start experimenting with this option. thanks for your clear view on this!

I tried to implement something similar as a frig training course in a previous corp position. I know any number of entities would love to do in house competition play with a controlled environment. However the reality of setting up matches and managing the starts is frustrating. And that is not even counting outside interference. Then again the duel system helps there to allow for spectators without shinanagans.

But I digress, I know in my place a year ago I could have sold the corp on the benefit from the outcome vs (reasonable) cost. Feel free to mail me if you want to know more of how I failed ;)

Approach various corps and use as a source of entertainment and pvp training. Have the corp provide a reward with the understanding that the house(you) takes a cut.
