Why is every second toon for sale advertised as able to fly one?

Are they that great?

They used to be great 6 to 9 months ago, which is about the time needed to train a new guy into a Tengu.

Nowadays they are still decent, but there are better alternatives for most tasks.

Historically they were the most popular PVE ship in the game and solid and versatile in PVP too.

They aren't quite as strong now but they are still good at a lot of things and extremely versatile.

heavy missiles used to be really OP, so the tengu using them was really OP (fast, high damage, low sig, killer tank)

so they made you choose between range (HML) or good damage (HAM).
so now you cant just volley the webbing towers that you can sometimes find 60km+ away if you fit HAM's
since you're range is only like 45 km

and if you fit HML's you do about 3/5th of the damage aka slower site clearing.

Also there is a T3 re-balance coming up which will supposedly focus on T3's flexibility at the expense of their expertise (master of no trades). After the T3 links nerf I think it's pretty safe to say that the balance team are going to stamp fairly hard on the fingers of T3 viability that are clinging to the edge of the abyss right now. On the bright side they have indicated that they'll buff lesser used sub-systems so you'll have a choice between outclassed ham, hml, rail and blaster tengus rather than being stuck with decent ham, tolerable hml and worthless rail and blaster like you do now.

maybe HS players moved to battleships.. they still great for null where kinetic damage is required and wh's where size of the ship and damage application for range is needed.

Tengu was king, for level 4 missions, till the recent heavy missile nerf. Doing L4s in a tengu was a pleasure unsurpassed. For a while I used a two tengu setup which was the single most effective way of decimating L4s.

My life currently is a mess, as nothing else is fun after flying the (pre-nerf) HM tengu.

So many mission runners had a tengu alt, and some of the characters on the market may be these alts that are no longer fun to fly.

Any colour you like.

LOL, tengu lost some range and it takes an extra volley or 2 to kill the BS... its really not that bad.. But to be honest a BS did a mission faster than a tengu did in the past anyway, so nothing has really changed that much.
Try a mach.. they super fun to fly also
