My Patching Problem Solution

My patching problem began when I tried to start Eve from an instance of the launcher that had been running since yesterday. Eve started up and told me there was a new build and downloaded the patch. After that, the launcher wouldn't run at all and all exefile.exe did was constantly re-download the patch.

While poking around in the Eve folder, I found a launcher_console.exe in the launcher folder. I ran that from a command prompt. Looking at the output, it looked like it was complaining that "D:\Program" was not found. I've seen that behavior before in programs that don't deal well with the spaces in "Program Files (x86)". I moved the entire CCP folder from \Program Files (x86) up to the root of the D:\ drive and ran the launcher. From that point on, everything worked perfectly. I was able to log into Eve with no problem.

There was one unfortunate side effect, though. Eve thought I was logging in for the first time. The tutorial came up. All of my window positions were back to default and, worst of all, my overview settings were gone. I moved the CCP folder back under D:\Program Files (x86)\ in hopes that my settings would come back, but they didn't. I'll have to play around with the settings in my User folder to see if I can get them back. At least now I can get into the game. Worst case scenario is a hour or so getting everything back where I like it. And you can be sure I'll get a new backup of my overview settings, too.

Interestingly, once everything was patched, that launcher_console.exe was gone. I'm guessing it's only there as part of the patch process.

If a dev reads this, there are two key points I hope they pick up on. First, my patching problem began when the main Eve client, not the launcher, initiated downloading the patch. This is the second time this has happened so I'm pretty confident there's a connection. Other patches have made it to my machine just fine when the launcher is the one that finds and installs them. The other point is that when things get into this situation, the launcher/patcher seems to be choking on the spaces in folder names.
