Getting owned in PvE

I was hoping to get advice on PvE.

I actually got blown up in a L1 mission by NPCs which is discouraging at best.

I was in a thrasher which hurts even more.

I was trying to be an armor tank but that doesn't seem to work too well for me. Should I try and switch to shield tank? Maybe I just need to get my skills up, I'm not sure. Any advice on surviving better in PvE would be awesome.

Well where you using the right resists for the mission? Did you even fit a rep?

I had a rep on but didn't get enough rep before I blew up.

Did you try to warp out? Level 1 (and 2) missions shouldn't have any NPCs that will disable your warpdrive. As long as you start warping when you see your tank going down (and not when you're already in structure), you should be able to get away almost always.

Also, read the mission descriptions before you accept them. Some of them you're not supposed to fight in, just get to a specific point or loot a container and get out. If you try to stay and fight, you'll get overwhelmed.

Fit the resists that match the damage type of the NPC's (the mission description should tell you which NPC's you'll be facing).

Don't sit still. Orbit the NPC you're shooting at whatever range your weapons have (therefore, fit only one type of weapon, ever).

Also, even some L1 missions can be quite hard (happened to me and my poor little Destroyer too, when I just started out; several times, in fact Oops)

A first indication for the difficulty of a mission is the time allowed to complete for the bonus reward: the longer the harder.

Also, not all missions are "kill everything", some missions aren't meant to be cleared and are much tougher if you try to. Read the mission description and consider looking up a mission guide.

If all the advice here isn't helping, post your fit. There are probably changes that can be made to help.

Get longer range weapons.

Almost got killed by pirates in my first mission and had to warp out. Refitted my destroyer to be effective at over 2x my previous range. Now have no more problems on missions.

for any missions:

check out which damage type you need to deal and which resists you need.

I looked up new fits for my ships and got some drones/cruiser for the harder missions. Thanks for all the help.

Frigate L1, Cruiser L2.

Pick a ship accordingly and work on those Masteries.

Are you used to shield boosting? You rep at the beginning of the module cycle when Shield boosting. This is different from armor repping, so you might have started repping when it was already too late.
