As a UK citizen I can honestly say that the EU has been nothing but **** for us... but if you wanna hop on the ride which is difficult to get off be my guest.

And since when is Iceland part of the European Union? We have a few treaties with them, but i am pretty sure they are not a European country like for example Germany is. Same thing with Switzerland.

See, that's my point exactly. "Legit" doesn't mean anything in this context, it's a subjective idea and a matter of opinion, and everyone will have his idea about its meaning.
Hence why the initial argument of OP is flawed. People in Ukraine doesn't (or shouldn't) want to join the EU because they think they "righteously" belongs there, but because they want, as a people, to be part of a common project that politically suits them.

I think you might find that after Jan 1 2014 there will be little appeal in further Eastern expansion for the EU. Not just in the UK, either, Italy, France and Germany all have problems with whats happening now.

We (the UK) are the only people in Europe who are stupid/servile enough to actually implement and enforce all the crap that comes from Brussels so we only have ourselves to blame.

Petition to impose personal sanctions against allegedly corrupted president of Ukraine, his family, Ukrainian government. Some Ukrainian politics talk about treason yet there are no working legal mechanics for their talks to become actions within Ukraine itself. Hence the plea to US government by desperate Ukrainians.
