Either the observer is in the middle of the action, which means they are a part of one of the warring sides, which means they are biased.
Or they are not a part of the action, which means they lack any first hand information, which means they are fatally inaccurate.

There is no such thing as an accurate unbiased depiction of events. What to one side is a calculated tactical retreat, to the other is a crushing victory - and neither side is wrong. The best way to stay informed is to disregard any reports which claim to be "unbiased" (as there is no such thing, anyone who claims to be so only intends to deceive you into believing their propaganda), and look equally for a perspective from both sides of the conflict.

This is false.

Your example about victory vs retreat is moot, since your example involves a pity debate over the intention of an action rather than a description of the action itself (eg, the army was repositioned).

There aren't any unbiased news sites even in RL. The key is to see which news site is biased towards which side, read sites from both sides, discard obvious bull**** from both sites as propaganda and find the middle. That middle ground is as close to the truth as you can get (apart from participating in the events described).
