Okay. Last week I had to explain the whole clone mechanics in EVE a couple of time, so I decided to write down a very little guide about clones for those that actually read the forums for help.

EVE Online uses different types of clones and not all of the time it's clear which does what, so here is a little work down on what clones there are and what they do.

1. Your active clone - It's the body you are currently in. It's the one that controls your ship and holds your current implants that are active.

2. Your medical clone - It's your "respawn" point when you die (get podded). This clone is used to resurrect you to life in case of an early death by another player. They come with a Skillpoint (SP) limit, this limit basically means how much SP it can store.
If you have more SP when you die then your medical clone can hold, you will lose a 5% of the difference of your SP vs the clone limit in one skill. The default medical clone you start with and the free one you get after you get podded is the Alpha clone, which hold 900.000 SP. Upon medical clone activation, it is used up. So if you are above 900.000 SP, you have to buy a new upgrade for it (update it again).

3. Your jump clones (JC) - These are extra bodies you can install and use. When jumping to another jump clone (aka use that one), you will make it that JC your active clone (see point 1) and your old active clone will become a JC. As each JC is a different body, each JC can have it's own set of implants.

Skills needed for jump clones:
Infomorph Psychology - Let's you make 1 additional jump clone for each skill level.
Infomorph Synchronizing - Reduces time between clone jumps by 1 hour per skill level.
Advanced Infomorph Psychology - Let's you set up 1 additional jump clone for each skill level.

Some Q&A I often saw in relation to clones:

Q: Do I have to upgrade my jump clones to hold a certain amount of SP?
A: No. Jump clones have nothing to do with retaining your trained SP. They are only bodies you which you can activate once every 19 - 24 hour (depending on skills). They become your active body once activated. If you die, you are brought back to life in your medical clone. The medical clone is the clone that covers your skillpoints.

Q: If I die, will I lose my jump clone?
A: No. The only way to lose a jump clone is by destroying it yourself from the jumpclone menu in the character sheet. You die in your active clone and are brought back to life in the same active clone (minus any implants that were lost when you got podded). Jump clones are the extra bodies you have in stock docked in a station.

Q: I forgot to update my clone and lost SP when I got podded, is this normal?
A: Yes. Your medical clone only holds a certain amount of SP. If you have more SP then your medical clone can cover. You will lose a portion of SP from a single skill.

Q: How do I set up a jump clone?
A: There are multiple ways to set up a jump clone:
1. Gain enough standings (8.0 or above) with a NPC Corp or Faction that is the owner a NPC station with a medical facility. This can be either personal standings or standings of the player corporation you are part of.
2. Have another capsuleer that has the Clone Vat Bay fitted to his Rorqual / Titan grand you access to use that module to set up a clone.
3. Have access to the medical facility of 0.0 Player owned outposts (this likely requires you to either be part of their alliance or good friends with their alliance).
4. Use one of the services provided by EVE players to setup your jump clones, those services require you to join their corp for the duration of setting up the jump clone and then leave again, they will provide you with the needed standings listed in point 1. The most well known party that offers this is Estel Aradors Corp Service (see here).

Q: Will implants move with me when I change jump clones?
A: No. Each jump clone has it's own set of implants (or possible set of implants).

Q: I just got podded, where is the medical clone I bought 2 days ago?
A: Any upgrade you do to the medical clone is only for a one time use. Upon podding your medical clone is used to bring you back to life. This means upon each death you have to upgrade the medical clone again to match your skillpoints again.

Q: Where is my medical clone located?
A: Open up your character sheet and expand the top info part. Behind home system you will see the name of a system / station. This is the location of your medical clone.

Q: Can I move my medical clone to another station?
A: Yes. You can move medical clones to different stations if you like. Your options are:
1. Any station your current corporation (in case of a player ran corporation) has a corporation office at.
2. The current station you are docked in.
3. Default stations that are linked to your race / bloodline when you created your character.
Tip: You can move medical clones to stations that do NOT have medical facilities. But it's wise to not use such stations. Upon pod death your first course of action should be to update your clone again to match your skillpoints. If the station does not have a medical bay, you can't do that and have to fly to a station with a medical facility to do it in an unsufficient medical clone and risk the loss of SP if you get podded again before you have the chance of updating your clone.

Q: How many implants can I put in a clone?
A: Up to 10 at one single time. Each clone you have comes with 10 implant slots. Each implant requires a certain slot and only 1 implant can be in a slot at one single time. It is not possible to change the slot an implant goes into. Slot 1 - 5 are mainly used for attribute enhancing implants (from +1 up to +5) or special T2 implants (snakes, slaves, nomads). Slot 6 - 10 are used for hardwiring implants (to increase gun RoF, to make you more agile, to harvest more ores, to give better leadership boosts).

Q: What are the benefits of having jump clones?
A: There are mainly 3 reasons for people to use jump clones:
1. Instant travel between 2 places. People who live in null-sec usually have 1 jump clone in high-sec to sell/buy items and/or skillbooks. This saves them from having to fly from null-sec to high-sec to fetch some skillbooks and risking death. *Where it says null-sec it could also say low-sec*
2. To have 2 different implant sets. For instance 1 clone with a set of implants that boost armor tanking ships while the other clone boosts shield tanked ships. The person can then use the jump clone that suits the ship he is going to fly.
3. To provide cheaper loss. Kind of similar to 2, 1 clone has high value implants (for instance +5 attribute implants) and the other has no / cheap implants. The person can use the cheap implant clone in activities that have a higher risk of losing the pod.

Of course, there are endless of other examples here that will suit any individual pilots playstyle.

Q: Can I have more then 1 jump clone in 1 station?
A: No. You can only store 1 jump clone in a single station. This how ever does mean that if you are currently docked in a station that holds one of your jump clones, you can jump to that jump clone. As this will swap your current active clone and the jump clone around.

Q: I have set my jumpclone at a station. Can I only dock it in stations that I have enough standings with?
A: No. The pre-requirements listed above are only to create a jumpclone. After it is made, you can move it to any station you desire and leave it there.

Though correct, not complete, and you know how pedantic I can be when my OCD flares-up.

You lose the 5% difference of skill points from the skill with the most skill points, up to a limit of 50% of the skill points in that skill. Typically this is a skill with a lot of skill points because of a high rank (skill points multiplier; for example, racial battleship skills are all rank 8].

The only other thing that made my OCD tingle was the life-cycle of a clone, presented here for "clarity":

Current clone dies (podded) ➙ Medical clone becomes your new current clone ➙ New 'Alpha' grade medical clone is created for you automatically, and free of charge.

Thanks for the addition.

Though lifecycle is kind of explained in 2nd Q of 2nd post.
