Do 'planetology' and 'advanced planetology' actually do anything except for add more colour to the planet screen ?

A char with none of these skills finds recources just as easy and just as much as with the skills.

My excperience anyway, any thoughts or facts on " this" !?

no skills --> the heatmap is DEAD ******* WRONG
5/5 skills --> the heatmap is pretty much dead on.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

I found that going to 3 is a good middle ground, or going to 4 (I think) to access Adv Planetology, then getting that also to 3 at a minimum if your using extractors. If your just doing factory planets, these skills are about as useful as **** on a bull.

I slide the resolution bar down and find the same result as with a skilled char
doesnt make much difference to the output

Actually, it does. On a lesser skilled character, pay attention to what your ECU tells you is the average per hour number over the life of the extractor while setting up the head locations. Then go back in after installing the job (starting the ECU) and look at how much those numbers change.

A player with 5/5 will notice that their initial ECU numbers are a much closer match to the end result then a player with 0/0 skill.

The common break points for Planetology / Advanced Planetology skills are:

0/0 - nothing
3/0 - quick to learn, gives fairly good results
4/0 - not worth it (may as well train 4/3)
4/3 - probably the optimal skill level for semi-professional
4/4 - optimal level in terms of training time vs accuracy
5/4 - for the dedicated few
5/5 - for the dedicated few

Because Advanced Planetology only requires Planetology IV as a per-requisite, it's common to end up with 4/3 instead of just 4/0 (because the first 3 points in AdvP train quickly). Most of my alts run 3/0, a few run 4/3 and I have one that has 4/4 who does all of my preliminary surveys when I'm hunting for a new set of planets to harvest.

This is a very good rule of thumb - I recommend 4/3 or 4/4 so I'm glad that seems to be a good criteria.

Having said that, I do have an alt who has 5/5 (initially thought to train him to guide others to the goodies, but that turned out to be too much hassle) anyhow - this chap does consistently pull more from his planets than others with similar setups though this might not have anything to do with his scanning skills (could be he has better planets, also I don't spend a lot of time optimizing the output of characters with low skill points)
