It can be to block others..... a HUGE order will often put people off, so you keep the price where you want it.

Other uses I have......if no one is using buy orders for an item, and I want to stimulate the market, I can place a huge buy order, for say lowsec ore in highsec, which people will likely never fill, aside from 1-2 at a time here and there, but, it makes it look like there is a demand, and, over time, you get more buyers popping up, and some sellers creep in too.

The opposite of the first point works too, if I want to set a floor on say, ore, I can put a HUGE region buy up which will never get filled, at a "sensible" price. Thereby making sure the price never drops below it, and people will pile on top of it.

I am sure there are also more advanced reasons than these, but this is why I do it

I bet that's what the guy at McDonalds™ thought when I placed my order...

It's not really *that* advanced.

A guy sets up a large order in hope to scare the opposing traders away.

I.e. imagine a guy buys 200B worth of stuff at 800 (he did not read my analysis Pirate) and finds out price is stalling forever at 802. He knows that market also tends to dip on a certain day because of ~reasons~.
He might want to setup i.e. a 20-30B order to show the buyers "muscles" and scare away people who would want to sell.

This may result in enough sellers to think: "well if buyers are so strong I'll sell another day, when price is even higher" and then price will really rise.
