CCP t0rfifrans tells us all about the new nebulae in his latest dev blog. And he's got amazing pictures to go along with it!

Enjoy!

Cat approves +1

Edit: oh yes, would be awesome if you could make some wallpapers with the new nebulae =)

Well done CCP, I think wormhole explo will be more fun too as you'll have an idea where you wh exits go in HS before you jump!

This sounds awesome.

Also, +1 for a very well written dev blog. I am made for the happiness.

How will the new effects gel with the older ship models though?

I'm sure the nebulae + new ship shaders + new ships will look winsauce. :D

Made me really laugh out loud. Looks and sounds good.

I may not like you or your point of view but you have a right to voice it.

They might do just that ;). But we want confirmation from you guys so once the SiSi build is up (tonight or tomorrow), let us know!

Dark space in my EVE, I approve whole heartedly. Now all that remains is for you to make it so, that the star significantly dims when you get further away from it within a system. I'd like to feel that I'm flying inside an actual star system at great speeds and moving large distances, instead of moving within a small room with a single static lightbulb in the middle of it.

Excellent work!

Why are the screenshots at such a low resolution? What's wrong with 1920x1200??

Sounds excellent.

I'm curious about the V3 project though, and this might be a good time to ask...

Way-back-when.... there was talk, that when the new shader system came around, it might be possible to have your ship reflect a certain amount of 'planet light', as well as that from nebulae -- for example, a reddish tinge on the side nearest a lava planet, etc... Do you think that'd be possible?

Looking great, but I have a couple of suggestions:
Within a region you can still generate some feel of differentiation between systems by warping the coordinate space of the skybox, this is a trivial thing to do with existing shaders.

Can we fix the gates orientation in space so that they appear to jump in the direction of the destination system - right now every gate points the same direction.

Are the stars painted onto the nebula texture? Are the constelations going to be static within a region?

Hell yes. 'Space is too small' - or at least, it *feels* that way to a lot of people... so, bringing in a change like that would even help solar systems themselves to feel that good-bit bigger... That, for me, would be the perfect addition...

Great Job!

I'm somewhat and somehow disappointed of the granularity chosen for each unique backdrop. Region based granularity seems too big for my taste. At first I thought you would notice the changes in the position of nebulae at a solar system basis, each time you jump from an stargate to an other.

I think this will help newer players out a lot. I know I consistently had the "where the heck am I" feeling for the first few weeks, and even now on long trips will suddenly look up and go, "oh, I'm in Amarr space" or whatever.

How will Factional Warfare space be colored?

Fix POSes.  Every player should want one (even if all players can't have one).
