Apparently the US has "revealed" plans to develop a hyper-sonic drone spy plane which is designed to fly at 6X the speed of sound.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24803511

Now correct me if I am wrong here but any time the US "reveals" a top secret project means they already have it in one form or another just take a look at the F-117 Nighthawk, the B-2 Spirit and SR-71 Blackbird. The US had them for years before they became public knowledge.

I wonder if this is or based on the aurora all the conspiracy people are going crazy about?

While I don't agree with offensive weapons such as this, the technology behind them is simply amazing. Mach 6 is very fast compared to what's available right now. Its a nice step forward in engineering and aerodynamics.

I've heard of aurora for years and years now. Who knows what it really is or if its just some silly conspiracy created by the US.

They may mount weapons on it but it is currently unarmed.

I'd bet there will be an armed variant sooner than later. The potential for a Mach 6 unmanned JDAM delivery truck will make the powers that be very jealous.

Late, overpriced and at the wrong address? Sounds about right :)
(Sorry its in the contract, I had to say it)

But as for the plane.... You don't reveal your latest toys, that means this is what they have been using for the last few years, and if there isnt an armed version by now then I would be very surprised.

The whole concept though is very wrong, how loud would the US scream if other countries started flying drones over their country without permission? yet they feel it is perfectly acceptable to do it themselves.

The drones in space that can read your license plate are apparently not doing the job. What the US needs is slower and closer to their Air Defenses...

The Marine Corp has already explored that option.

Well "spy" drones are not used as much as they once were....and your forgetting China (and the soviets) probity have spy spy satellites orbiting the US as we speak, and vice versa

The only "real" use for drones now are ordinance delivery or to sweep an area that is not visible to satellites ie cloud cover and things like that.
