Wait... you haven't heard? Half-naked Vampires and Console FPS is the _in thing_ now.

Only half? Dammit, CCP can't get anything right.

CCP,

It's been 10 years, and your game is aging badly. Have you ever considered EVE 2.0?

Set up a kickstarter, or get some capital some other way, and rewrite your Frankenstein code from the bottom up. That's all - rewrite it, make it tighter, make it cleaner, make it easier to adjust in the future. Take advantage of new hardware technologies and build in room to take advantage of future upgrades. And make it more compatible with walking in stations :)

And ****, just this once, sell it as an expansion rather than giving it away. Between start up capital and sales, you could hopefully spend upwards of $20 million giving EVE a much needed facelift, that'll hopefully allow you to 1) fix longstanding problems 2) run everything smoother (less TiDi, more responsive game) 3) add new features and upgrades without making it sound like you need the Rosetta Stone to understand how to code it.

Please?

So in the 2+ years or so that they are off writing EVE 2.0, what do they do with this EVE. Does is just stagnate or do they shut it down? Also, since they'll be wiping all my progress, do I get any of it back in EVE 2.0?
As for selling an expansion, they could do that, if they want to lose 90% of the player base. I run 8 accounts. You think I'm going to pay an extra 8 times over to play EVE? Doubtful. Many others are the same.

TIL EVE playerbase is bad at reading comprehension and has reaaaaalllllyyy low expectations.

And comparing cleaning up the code to WOW is just flat out ******** . . .

But to the non-trolls (and the one helpful guy who talked about the Carbon thingie I did not know of) can you think of a better solution other than status-quo? Seems like an efficient rewrite would almost demand new capital, and I don't know how CCP could do that short of a re-release/paid expansion, kickstarter, or (shudder) heavily ramped up microtransactions (NO, please)

tl;dr:

Ohai! I don't know the first thing about software, but you should totally rewrite everything "better" and slap a 2.0 on the label. I'm willing to pay upwards of $50! I'm totally sure this will allow you to fix everything.

You can have that done by next year right?

Uh, first I'll point out that EVE already is "stagnating," I guess- they've been rebalancing ships for a while now, and that's about it. But remember, it's a damn sandbox, so how much more dev content do you really want? How could the game "stagnate" any more than it already is? Less moon siphons?

Also, wiping what progress? You create, name, and populate a new planet when I wasn't looking? Yeah you keep your isk and assets.

Only legitimate concern would be your claim that you would quit if you needed to buy eight expansions. But I'll tell you a secret - anyone who is running eight characters in a damn video game is gonna have a hell of a hard time letting go. They've already got you through the sack and back again, muhboy.

Unless you're equating this to Incarna (which could admittedly apply). To avoid a mass exodus, CCP would have to make damn sure that they actually meet expectations, and clean up the code to reduce and eliminate all of my previous concerns, making a game that's far more responsive to change and can handle a lot more people in one place at one time.

It was nice of you to admit you don't know the first thing about software - hell, you probably even read the fun link some other poster left, explaining why Netscape Navigator (lol) back in 2000 (lol) was bad for rewriting the code for their free software (lol) that was competing with an effective near-monopoly at the time before . . . getting replaced by an upstart browser which was rewritten from the ground up. High Firefox!

I imagine it would take two years to complete an overhaul, with EVE continuing to run the whole time, so many additional assets would be needed to get it done. And while you might be poor, I bet a lot of people would pay (some of them even gladly) if it meant CCP was able to drag EVE into the 21st century.

NEVER REWRITE CODE, LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO NETSCAPE IN THE YEAR 2000!

(I'll admit, some of the discussion in the post itself was very accurate, but also situational, and it's sure as **** not a hard and fast rule. )

There was a time when people were waiting for Diablo 2. Then Ultima Online appeared and many agreed it was "Diablo 2".

It seems we have similar situation with EVE now. It's just ~1.5 years to wait for "EVE 2".

and D2 was badass.

For the illiterate, I don't want them to fundamentally change EVE, I want them to clean it up, so (for example) it doesn't take a year to make SMAs drop loot because the coding is so awful.

Or (for example) nodes that can handle more players with less horribad lag and hopefully a lot less TiDi.

no other game has really attempted to try and get as many people on the same server, if ccp does upgrade eves engine they should grant unallocated skill points in the new client for everyone's characters, and obviously isk transfer.

Of course, I wouldn't want a skill reset, or an asset reset, or a sov reset, or any sort of reset. Just a recoding, that (after lengthy testing) would result in an extended downtime and a transfer of all of the old over onto the new.

They have plans which are being worked on, to replace code and re-architect bits of Eve which are primary pain points.

Brain in a box. (A major cause of TiDi is the rebuilding of character details on session changes. Brain in a box will help correct that, by offloading it to a different server, and removing the requirement for a complete rebuild. This will take work on /anywhere/ skills are accessed.)

Offloading client updates to a different thread, rather than having them inline.

It's not sexy changes, so you shouldn't expect much in the way of updates on it (you can only say "we're working on it" in so many ways) but it's being worked on.

This guy gets it.

I just wish CCP would engineer a heavy injection of capital and speed the damn process up.
