Yes, Captain James Kirk is real and he is currently in the USN and just took command of the USS Zumwalt.

I feel so sorry for that man.... he must have gotten so much ribbing in officer school.

That ship is fugly too.

Then again, i know naff all about naval vessels so it might be a superb hull design, but still fugly imo.

I'll stick to dry land thank you very much.

I wonder why nobody here comments the real news: Citizen Kane... err, I mean, Commissar Kate, is smoking hot in her new portrait. Bear

It's a stealth ship. Which means that if anyone gets close enough to see it, it has failed. Unless it's so ugly that they block the memory.

Hm, only difference is that the water kirk has cloaking technology. Original enterprise is considered a destroyer class and got no cloaking device. :O

Someone in Pentagon has obviously been sleeping since he hasn't been given the command of USS Enterprise.

It looks pretty awesome. It also looks like a submarine, minus the going underwater thing.

The thing is massive too. 600ft long and almost 15,000 tons. Not to mention very expensive.

I really don't even seen the need for such a ship right now. Big waste of money IMO but such is the way of government defense contractors that get massive amounts of money.

But I guess we can look on the bright side. The project was finished on time and on budget.

Dunno, but isnt a nuclear powerplant also electric oriented? I mean those supply electricity dont theye, or is there a driveshaft comming out of the nuclear plant to drive a propeller?

Normally a nuclear powered vessel is powered by a steam turbine which directly turns the propeller shaft.

Conventional Destroyers are powered by gas turbines which directly turn the propeller shafts.

However I believe the Zumwalt is the first to have the gas turbines not drive the propellers directly and have them driven electrically instead.

Uh oh, Kirk in the captain's seat. I hope they gave him training about not sexually harassing the female crew members. Rules about that are stricter in the USN than the Federation.

Modern Navy ships don't look very fun. No portholes. Seems like it would be a claustrophobic as a sub. But I guess the crew can go up on the deck sometimes. Then again, crew members might not be radar-avoiding stealth substances.

That's not going underwater, but it comes close.
