The warp drive generates strange effects on a ship. The ship experiences friction with increases exponentially, proportional to velocity and mass. This creates a fluid-like effect the the ship.

Also, there is no space. There is only yourself.

If that was the case you'd never be able to enter another planet's orbit, as one planet may move several km/s faster relative to another planet. Then, another question would be what would be the reference point? Velocity relative to what?

You could start coming up with answers like "velocity relative to local gravity well" but then what about space in between planets?

I actually tried to come up with a way to handle that. When you are away from a planet your velocity is relative to the sun. If you are in the orbit of a planet and the planet in its orbit comes to you, there would be a buffer zone where your frame of reference transitions to that of the planet.

One oddity is CCP could make it so ships would not point in the direction they are moving, but in the direction they are accelerating. To slow your ship would spin around and fly rear end first. This would not require a server change, a change to ship motion equations, or to how you navigate your ship. It would be purely a graphics change that would be local to your client. The client would just use different rules for what direction it shows a ship pointing. It could even be an option in the esc menu: Show airplane like motion, or Show spaceship like motion.

The reason this would work is the server and the equations of motion for our ships all assume a ship is a simple sphere. The graphic model of the ship could be shown pointing in any direction inside that sphere.

They have a gravity-based braking system. Every time a ship flies through a sun, planet or moon, it refuels its gravity brakes.
