Macbook Air - Most Epic Ultraportable Ever?

But they make me feel like one of those douchebags who wear Che Guevara shirts. Still, basically a middle of the line computer with instant on or close to it and fantastic multitasking capability at under three pounds. Also, OS X Lion is fantastic. Why did no one ever tell me this before?

Out of curiosity, what are people's experiences with the PC Ultrabooks? I've heard varying things about them.

You made me wonder so I got to ask: Does it play EvE?

I was gonna ask. Can you install other apps than Apple's own or do you need to jailbreak it?

Bit off topic. I bought a Mac Mini last week, plays Eve fine. On higher settings it get pretty loud. On lower setting it seems fine. I did return it yesterday, not because anything was wrong with it. I have a Big Mac as my primary machine and figured a PC as a sendondary would give me more gaming options.

Bit on topic. If the mini works the book should too.

Do not assume anything above this line was typed by me. Nerf the Truth, it's inconvenient.

You can play EVE with the Air, just not with high settings in the CQ or anything like that. Space is lovely though. And no, you don't have to jailbreak it to install non-Apple applications :p It just needs to work with OS X (although you can dual boot if you're that needy).

Do you have to wear a turtle neck to use it?

Don't be mean like that.

Even my iBook G3 does not need turtle neck and speaks to the right click button on my mouse. Big smile

I played with one a while back. I was unimpressed. It's small and light...and has lackluster performace (for a person like me), doesn't have the ports I want, and has a tiny screen. Plus, it's absurdly expensive for what it does. (but then it is a Mac)

@Headerman yes, it requires a black turtleneck. Otherwise it tells you that you're not worthy. Also, only hipster music can be downloaded to the hard drive.

@Floppie, how long ago did you try one? The recent ones (released in June or July of this year) are much better than previous iterations. I don't require a powerful computer when I'm on the go, (that's what my PC desktop is for), and its not that expensive compared to other ultraportables.

I think you all should be reminded on Intel's Ultrabook project. An asus zenbook ux31 review can be found here for the intel powered windows ulrathin laptop that wants to be a macbook air. And i think it even runs eve(though not well) on an intel 3000 series on chip gpu.

I was also wondering this.

Do you need to listen to pink floid and drink PBR to get the thing to boot faster?

If I wanted a computer to be that small and portable, chances are I'm not going to be doing any high intensity gaming on it.

That's why I have my Asus transformer. All the portability, none of the annoying Apple limitations, insane battery life with the keyboard, and the office software is just as good as LibreOffice on my desktop. Plus it's a touchscreen. Oh, did I mention it cost a half of the Air?

Do you do research? Or do you just spout things off like Fox News? That ultraportable is $1100. My Air was $1100 (with the $50 discount) for what is essentially the same computer (my Air has a slightly better processor).

OpenOffice is what I use on the Mac, I have the Microsoft Suite on my PC (Got it of free, and legit). I looked at the Asus Transformer, but it wasn't what I wanted in a portable computing device, I didn't find it powerful enough to do the things I wanted to do. Plus, I didn't want to deal with a Tablet OS (as much as I love Android).

Still, I don't see why people think the Air is overpriced, current ultraportables that have the same or similar quality are just about the same price. Mac's computers are generally overpriced, and so are a lot of their accessories, but the Air is the one thing they don't sell like retards.

And @Xenuria, I answered that question. And no, you don't have to drink PBR, and I already mentioned that the hard drive refuses to allow non-hipster music to be played. And god help you if you aren't listening to it "ironically."

Do like me, buy the Apple MacBook Air 11.6 inch model (2010 model), then take it home.

When you arrive at home, then install rEFIt on Mac OSX so you can boot up USB sticks with Windows 7 on. After doing that, download the Boot Camp drivers on your main computer from the Apple website and then just move the Boot Camp files to the MacBook Air and install it.

After that, do this. And when you are installing Windows 7, then delete all of the partitions and create some new partitions. One for Windows 7 and maybe 1 or 2 for games and other stuffs.

Then you install Windows 7 and says bugger off to Mac OSX Lol. And when you are in Windows 7, then you just installs Boot Camp and voila, you have one of the best ultrabooks with the best OS in the world Big smile

Only pros do like me.

I dont mean to troll....but seriously whats the point of these ultrabooks, 1000+ for a glorified netbook with the power of a low end PC. Ok laptops can be a little bulky but for same price range or under you could have a beast.

It as simple as some people are just willing to pay that much extra for it to be extra thin?

Edit: For the record, I have a netbook and I LOVE it, but it was 200 euro

It is a niche item. I can see someone who travels and want large screen and keyboard buying one. Most of us don't need it, but some few do.

So you are comparing a poor ass plastic fantastic netbook to a MacBook Air ?
