Mr Epeen Cool

So why cannot the rest of us unwashed masses attempt to emulate our betters? Why are only the privileged few allowed to partake in certain e-commerce opportunities?

I simply aspire to elevate myself to the level where I may eat the leftover scraps from SOMER's table. Is that so much to ask from CCP?

"a bit of cash"...

His service would work perfectly fine without his giving credits(isk) for his referals. And it would remove this entire issue that we arent allowed to talk about.

Non peed off comment now:

OK, as stated previously, many services for multiple different games provide affiliation or ways of making money off their links to the game they support.

Usually the money they make from these affiliations are not public knowledge, but they are obviously substantial as these websites and services are highly professional.

Somerblink provides a great service for those who want to use it (compared to some competitors it is highly polished and addictive) and so why is it anyones business how much money they make. Its good to see people are making money from supporting the game community they service.

For example - the GF has played sims for years and has paid for and downloaded sims skins from websites. These websites make money off things other people can easily do. That download bandwidth costs money, but I'm sure they get more than they need to cover it.

Also places like Wowhead etc support their communities and make money from it.

Is this a problem? No. Should it be? No.

As I said jealousy.

It isn't relevant if he made 1 million or 1 he's providing a service to the community

I think we can talk about that but not label it with the three letters. Or perhaps calmer heads prevailed and we can talk about the whole issue, since the ISD posting here is a supervisor and a different person to the one who locked the other threads. Regardless, the information in the blog post feeds into the wider discussion about CCP's 'gifts' to Somer since it illuminates just how much of the timecard market he is responsible for. It seems reasonable that CCP would want to keep someone who contributes to c. 3 million in time-card sales on side. It does not seem at all reasonable that they should do so by giving him in-game advantages over other players (by rewarding his staff for their work with hundreds of billions of isk worth of ships, giving him even more to auction off and thus driving both isk and real money revenue for his site, and worst of all, vouching for his trustworthiness and past record in a game where such statements are a hugely valuable commodity).

Again its pure jealousy, standard business practice if supporting those people who make you money.

As for the scorpions, there have been plenty given out to people not just somer staff.

BTW I have no affiliation with somer other than playing the game and being annoying with people cutting their own nose off to spite their face.

I don't think anyone has a problem with him making money from the affiliation deal. I certainly haven't seen anyone complain about it. What they have a problem with is him giving players isk in order to drive the making of real money since most players have previously thought this to be against the EULA and since it is not clear that CCP will permit other people to exploit the same mechanisms. This issue is combined with the fact that his ingame business has been gifted very considerable ingame advantages (unique advantages) over his competitors.

So why are non-Somer players forbidden from partaking in this same GTC related e-commerce? If this practice is truly beneficial to eve, allow all to practice it.

DNSBlack was not allowed to go through with the transfer. And even if he was, or it was a troll, does that render the three sources you quoted invalid? You're the one that should be working for fox news mate.

Only that in this case not SOMER is supposed to be making the money, but the player base. If theyre about to take SOMER as their main income stream, why should I be forced to pay a subscribtion? If not, why should there be applied different rules to SOMER than to me?

Yes. Im jealous that I am not allowed to regain some of the money spent on this game while others are apparently allowed to.

His service has never been the issue, his revenue stream has. Is it not possible to run a referal without a reward? Can he not like E V E R Y other community service not do it without offering ingame rewards for out of game funds?

Would it be ok for lets say TheMittani.com to offer 100m isk if you donate 5$ for their server costs?
Would it be ok for an lowsec corps FC to offer 100m isk if you donate 5$ for keeping the mumble server running?
Would it be ok for a highsec mission runner to offer 100m isk if you donate 5$ to keep his PC top-notch?
Would it be ok for anyone to offer 100m isk if you donate 5$ for them to do a roam/mining op/whatever?
Would it be ok for me to offer 100m isk if you donate 5$ so I can pay my internet bill so I can continue playing?

Where is the line, who does create enough content in this game to be allowed to run it as a buisness? Its all we want to know.

You can say it is pure jealousy all you want but that doesn't make it so. People who were angry that BoB were gifted strategic advantages in their nullsec wars weren't just jealous because they wanted unfair advantages too. Rather, they wanted to play in a sandbox where everyone is on the same footing and the gods don't favour some puny mortals over others.

Do you think it would be ok for CCP to reward a nullsec alliance with valuable free strategic assets because they either drove business in CCP's direction or because they created content for the game, as the high-sec ice interdiction did? Presumably you wouldn't have an issue because 'standard business practice'.
