http://themittani.com/features/more-135k-somer-finances-investigated

Hardly just website maintenance income eh? The figure of 135k is what the owner of Shattered Crystal states Somer earned from him up to May 2013. Monthly earnings since then can be expected to be considerably higher, since a) Somer seems to have moved to Markee Dragon in exchange for a bigger cut of the profit, and b) Somer has been receiving huge boosts from CCP in recent months.

The key info:

Quote:
Another thing that Mr. Hutchinson told me was how much SOMERblink made from affiliate fees. SOMERblink was an affiliate of Shattered Crystal from 29 September 2010 to 9 May 2013 and made approximately $135,000. From looking at the records during this time, Mr. Hutchinson told me that the referrals from SOMERblink accounted for approximately one-third of all of Shattered Crystals sales (not profit) across all products. That includes game time codes, other cash cards and even copies of games for games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2.

One of the things I like about this story is how eve-appropriate it is. It seems pretty clear that Shattered Crystal is pouring fuel on the current fire because they are pissed off about losing Somer's business (a third of their total referrals) to a higher bidder. This appears to be their payback for Somer's attempt to strongarm them. Metamarket pvp.

So, given this information, how much real life cash is SOMERblink making per billion ISK given out for purchasing GTCs? These factors have to be accounted for:

An 8% commission means SOMERblink receives $1.60 for each 30-day GTC and $2.80 for each 60-day GTC sold.
SOMERblink gives out 200 million ISK for each 60-day GTC and 100 million for each 30-day GTC sold.
SOMERblink gives out a 200 million ISK bonus for every 4 60-day GTC sold.
The only way to cash out is to win blinks. The house pays out an average of 80% of money bet.

Take those factors into account and SOMERblink makes between $14-$20 per billion ISK given out. That ranges from the prices I see on some forums dedicated to RMT all the way up to the lowest cost commercial RMT sites I monitor, which currently is $17.64/billion ISK.

nuff said imo.

At least now we know why CCP keeps ignoring the obvious RMT. If Somer makes that kind of money CCP are making even more from it.

You have to take in to consideration that many many many people dont cash the money out but "gamble" it, he can then sell the same isk over and over again until someone actually does cash it out. With a 20% cut every time it runs through another blink it adds up.

OK lets put this into context shall we:

Every bloody fan site/fan source/etc makes money if they are popular.

Lets see - Wowhead, sims resources, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

Somerblink is just really popular and so he potentially makes a lot of money from his GTC affiliation, now so does alliances, and other sites this way.

You are all just hissy fitting over feck all and are just shooting yourselves in the foot over nothing.

or 135k $ recieved for computer programing , web application development and billions of isk tranfered to players as a rebate for active customers of the service which trades in game assets ? The source of isk is clear too.. come from their fee's in game.

Can I see the argument on the other side calling it RMT ? yes I can see the connection and it is a rational argument.

An important point of consideration of starkly apposing ways to look at it would be

the question of s of

--- "how scalable is this" .. does this open the door to a full , unlimited RMT?

... does this encourage/ risk some of the worst ILLS of the RMT like account theft? (the clear source of the isk given as incentives as royalties to the in game lotto vastly reduces that possibilty)

I'm not entirely against your points.. but it would be misleading to say "This is a knowing sanction of RMT" They see it differently and see the particulars of the transfer between players , the $ commision any GTC seller gets, and the various ways other GTC sellers promote their sales as not starkly different.

Corporations make $ to pay for their servers etc by encouraging theier members to purchase the GTC from the corp site. Corps have ship replacement programs etc .

Is that exactly the same? No.. but it is less starkly different than if Somer did not have a truly active in game presence and was ONLY offering the rebate without providing in-game entertainment that encouraged using them for GTCs out of more than just the rebate.

.... just not black and white. Strong specific truths. People will weigh differently.

The difference being, of course, that Somer gives people isk in exchange for the referral money.
