Does it really matter? I mean really.

No and yes :/, I had never heard of eve before since it seems like a niche game according to the current generation but I was surprised at the fact that for a game with such a deep gameplay is not very popular according to the current standards...
I guess quantity is not always better than quality..

Actually, there are a few things you need to consider here:

When you look at fantasy and science fiction, you need to remember that there is a VERY large difference in the fan base of either. The last research I've seen points to 90% fantasy fans to 10% science fiction fans. In other words, the very fact EVE is science fiction themed, will mean it's unappealing to an awful lot of gamers.

You also need to realize that EVE has a fairly bad reputation among people who play other MMO. Most of this is due to the fact that modes of gameplay that are cause for an instant permaban in every other game, like scamming and extortion/ransoming, are not only allowed but even promoted in EVE. Pretty much every player organisation that's been around for a while, especially the ones who are present in multiple games, will have rules that very explicitly prohibit that type of gameplay, meaning they will not join or promote EVE, and will advise their members not to touch it with a ten foot pole.

And then there's the fact EVE is PVP centric. While a lot of people enjoy PVP, the majority of gamers is either lukewarm about it or does not want to engage in it at all.

Lastly, there's the divide between those who enjoy sandboxes, where players make and are the content, and those who enjoy quest driven games with raids and gear grinds. From what I've seen, the quest/grind addicts have a firm majority. Which accounts for WoW and similar games and their staggering numbers of subscriptions. And sadly for the never-ending stream of whines that there is not enough 'content' in new games.
