Rubicon, or The Little Plan That Could

tl;dr for ADHD: The italized parts are different than what it's actually written at the original mesage by CCP Seagull introducing Rubicon and the future development plan it heralds; the italized parts make a different and potentially better plan than the actual one.

>>Rubicon - towards the future of EVE Online

EVE Online is not just a game - it's one of the world's most ambitious living works of science fiction. The EVE universe is a canvas for some of the most hard core PvP action in the gaming world, player driven stories of epic dimensions that mirror humanity in both amazing and disturbing ways, and individual stories of exploring this world and achieving personal goals.

As we take the next steps on our journey with EVE Online, we will continue to create an amazing, demanding game experience that challenges intelligent people to master what the universe offers. But now we are also questioning old truths and the rules that govern the New Eden universe, and we are doing it in line with the secret plans we've been readying since the controversial launch of Incarna. That vision is about giving players, in the form of their immortal capsuleer representations, more power over this universe than ever before. This journey starts with EVE Online: Rubicon, and will unfold over the next several expansions to EVE Online.

We ask you to imagine with us. Think about an ancient, consistent dream of humans: absolute power. Imagine conquering the stars and bending life itself to our will. Such gargantuan efforts are built on the hard work of science, engineering, innovation and industry - the same components also used to wreak terrifying destruction. The duality of that cycle, creation and destruction through technical advancements, fuels the EVE universe and we will amplify it in EVE going forward.

In the universe of EVE Online, military and industrial might re-emerged following the dark ages of the EVE Gate collapse, growing into four human civilizations that rose to the stars: the Amarr Empire, the Gallente Federation, the Caldari State and the Minmatar Republic. Yet the capsuleers, the immortal pilots of EVE's most powerful spaceships, are becoming a stronger and stronger force of their own. They will not settle with what has been served to them thus far. EVE Online: Rubicon is the first step beyond a point of no return, on a dangerous path to ascension with consequences that neither capsuleers nor players can predict.

Think about building political allegiances and about destroying them.

Think about the rise of the immortal capsuleer, taking over what the human Empires used to control.

Imagine capsuleer corporations, rising in power and capabilities, flying their own colors and using their might to take over whole planets. Imagine disrupting what someone else took over, through cunning or force. Imagine profiting from the interstellar-scale commerce of planets, systems and constelaltions as capsuleers permeate politics and seize power.

Imagine what could happen if capsuleers truly exercised their economic might, and were no longer bound to obedience to the established powers.

We are on a long term plan to deliver on what we imagine for EVE Online and New Eden. With Rubicon we continue our efforts to improve and balance the game, to support our player community, and give you the unique sandbox science fiction experience that EVE Online provides.

As capsuleers, you will find the first keys to the future.

Be part of the game. Be part of the universe. Be part of the story.

It's interesting how a few words here and there redeem the Hallelujah Plan from being a boring more of the same (sovereignty -> wormrholes -> NewSpace) and make it potentially exciting. And I didn't even had to mention avatars. Cool

Cool, you re-posted and edited an announcement from CCP.

TLDR: The OP does not think Rubicon will suck any more even if she can't pose and play dress-up in a social area.

As a business, CCP are in a ridiculously envious position. They seem to eventually have a plan to capitalise on it and the plan may be good.
Fingers crossed, please deliver.

I just sometimes wonder when the "we are just seeing the start of this right now" will end and we get to the "awesome" part they promised.

PI, Incarna, Dust link, now the "build your own stargate"... All big promises and CCP could not stop talking about how "awesome" this would be and "how crazy" they are to do this things. And look what we got so far.. an idiotic minigame, a useless room and you can shoot a planet...

... still waiting for a "Death Star" class, jump-capable battlestation that can lay a proper beating on planets... drive up those PI prices by shooting planets to bits... then seeing how long it takes an entire planet to "respawn"... shouldn't take more than 4 hour or so. P Or CCP can introduce "Planets" as a NeX store purchase and get those PLEX sales out of a rut... RollRoll

Well, when CCP Seagull made her prsentation at Fanfest, the idea already sounded as "more of the same in a different color: Go there, take it, hold it, exploit it, fight masive battles over it, lose a single war and leave the game because you no longer can afford to play your way".The question was wether there would be something else to it, but apparently there is not.

And the question is, for the next 3 years, CCP will be developing a plan to add more space for the enjoyment of people whose goal in EVE is owning space... that's fine, nullsec and wormholes have their dedicated populations and more or less are doing well... but then, as those niches get CCP love, what shall they do with the other 70% of players?

Looks like they're taking a minimal resistance course. They choose to please 30% of the playerbase rather than take risks and a chance to upset 100% of it -but also are giving up on pleasing 60, 70 or 80% of the players.

So, we expected the Hallelujah Plan to be revealed and it gave us nothing... yet again.

I don't know. So far, CCP Seagull did some bullshit bingo and nothing more. We will see next week how the approach to Smallholding will look and work. I honestly want all of it become part of the game, but I just can't see if/how the Depot will fit in the concept of modular POSes, if at all. At the moment it is a container with fitting service.

^^ This.

Getting RUBICON out early also concerns me. Why early? What does CCP need the time for otherwise ?

Be nice if CCP offered a little insight on their timetable (now that Soundwave is gone) and thus the early release date.

By releasing Rubicon 2 weeks earlier than usual, they're stepping on Egosoft's X-Rebirth release date (November 19th). Roll

The problem isn't CCP or what they are doing with EVE, it's that your expectations are unreasonably high. In other words, the problem is you.

To me CCP didn't have to do much more "awesome" than make tech1 cruisers worth flying in pvp, but time and time and time again they've delivered stuff so cool I'm still figuring it out. And now CCP has announced modules and deployables that will make my carebearing faster, easier and more fun (SOE ships, RHMLs, a loot gathering thhing etc etc) and I'm pumped for Rubicon.

I'm sorry the pace is too slow for you, but again, that's just a personal problem. Yet (as with all people who try to pretend their personal problems are public problems) you invoke the old/tired "they are ignoring the majority arguments".

No they are not. They are catering to the majority. They are ignoring YOU and the rest of the unreasonable people who don't understand why CCP re-adopted the "non-Jesus feature" approach. That's why CCP is a success whereas most MMOs and their makers end up folding......

Doing the same in a different way is not going to cut it, neither for burned out vets nor for wannabe players who don't find EVE's current content appealing.

After running in excess of 1,200 Lvl4 missions, I really could use a different PvE rather than some new toy. Bear

SOLVED!!

Shoot players like you shoot rats...better AI (well some of them are dumber than the rats) and scoop loot!

You can actually talk with them and socialize and ask for ransoms?
