For a long time the rifter has been top dog, the 'ak-47' of goonswarm...but...with the new blaster changes, the fairly new changes to rockets, and the increase of speed of the tristan hull....it has led me to a question.
not to mention if one had a small ecm drone ^_^

Two issues:
1. "because of neuts"
2. "because of burning away and hitting outside blaster range"

I'd say the Merlin has always been the best. But thats just me.

the neut can be a problem for the blasters, however less so, now that they use 30% less capasitor.
Not to mention the two rockets, and if both parties have a web/afterburner set up, will the new 10% faster Tristan get in range?

Up until now I have always done my merlin and tristan fits with autocannons instead of hybrids, that may change depending on how this rebalance works out.

The benefits of auto's and loosing no damage potential to neuts vs the blaster is an easy call atm but after rebalance will have to see.

A little off topic: Does he mean the soon to come blaster changes? Because I can't see anything in the patch notes indicating otherwise..

And a little on topic: If the blaster changes are to include a decrease in capacitor usage of blasters,
I could see more blaster boats being used in PvP. But my limited experience in Low-sec PvP indicates
more people use rockets on their Rifters than Nos/Neut anyway, so why not go for it now?
And don't Gallente boats have more capacitor to work with because of their cap-dependent guns?

(Thread hi-jacking in progress) Oops

I don't always post on the forums, but when I do, I prefer posting with my main.

what hi-jack you are dead on topic.

yes I am referring to the future changes. that i am defiantly looking forward too. Perhaps when they are finished with turrets they might give drones some loving too.

You put this thread down and back slowly away Big smile

The changes to blasters are coming in the, yet to be named, Winter Expansion. Hybrids and hybrid based ships are getting a buff, though the stats that have been posted in the Dev Blogs seem to be a mixed bag by most people standards (can't please pilots in New Eden.)

As for the question in the OP, I've always been a Merlin / Harpy fan myself (skipped frigate PvP and went straight to AFs) and didn't switch to the Rifter / Jaguar this past summer when I realized that I was trying to find ways to make my Harpy better with AC and moving to the Minmatar Frigates and AFs made more sense, lol

For the time being though, I'd say the Rifter will hold the #1 spot for a while longer.

Well ... I fly both in pvp ... Small acs and small blasters (and also laz and rocks). Problem of blasters is not cap... It is range. That is why i load null into my small blaster boats.

We will see how big the changes will be. I see more interesting if there will be more buff on dps, because in that case some ships will become again vaiable risk/option for me.

Also interesting will be buff on rails, because 125s with good tracking can change some boats into interesting kiting options. Dont mention 75s as their are kinda only good tracking small rails.

I agree with you in a 1v1 Merlin is better.
But as a rifter pilot you can easily disengage at any moment and just leave. The Merlin cant do a **** about it :P

The Rail-Vigil should get a nice buff out of this.

The Tristan violates the rifter even now before buff - so not much changing on that front really.

Your doing it wrong Shocked

But i look forward to see what will happen. I mean "back in 2007" the Firetail was the number one frigate with a top speed at 13000 m/s. Then we had the speed nerf and alot of the frigates was changed, the firetail totally turned and dropped from the 65m to about 12m and became to light version of the Jaguar. The Dremlin took its place.

I like the balance today as is, and there will always be a ship to complain about. Im unsure what changes will give, but i guess we start seeing alot of new tactics and fits.

If the Tristan will become the new Rifter.. Only if it moves faster...

Tristan has always been a solid combat ship you just have to know how to fit it and fly it. Never flown a Rifter in PVP, but I have always had better choices than the rifter Big smile
