You don't survive the attack in a Barge, the only way to survive is to escape before the attack comes.

One thing to keep in mind, is that most things are situational. Situational Awareness - includes what your goals are and how you are trying to achieve them - not just who's in local.

That is to say ... some things are more trouble than they are worth. You can do them but is it really worth while given your current situation? Thus, there aren't a lot of hard and fast rules. There are things you can do - but which you must decide if they are worth doing - for you - at the moment - given what you are currently doing.

Location is a primary consideration.

Things that are a must in low sec are not always something you have to do in hi sec - though practicing them in hi sec is a good idea if you plan on going to low sec ... maybe ... one day ...

Also - as a new person - you want to try and understand WHY someone is telling you to do something - and not just blindly follow their advice. Their advice might be excellent for what THEY are doing but not such a good idea for YOU.

Here's a few examples:

People say to NEVER mine AFK. Welll ... if you are pulling in a lot more ISK because you are mining AFK while doing your home work, watching TV or screwing the wife ("just a sec honey, I need to target some new asteroids ...") ... then you can simply buy a new ship with the extra ISK you made mining AFK as opposed to what you would have made otherwise. How much money do you have? How much more are you making by mining AFK? Your call.

Insuring your ship. What is the likely hood that you will lose it in the next 3 months (if that's still the period it covers)? If you are doing PVP - yeah ... you're likely to lose it ... if not ... maybe ... maybe not.

Being constantly aligned and having to constantly re-target your rocks may be worth while if you stand a high chance of being attacked - but otherwise is a giant pain in the ass. So - what are the chances of your being attacked? In low sec - Excellent - expect it. In a 1.0 system ... much, much less. Is it worth dedicating a module to webbing and flying in Tandem with a Corp Mate to slow your speed enough that you will warp instantly? Same thing.

Apha's. An alpha (strike) - last time I was actively playing - was the first broadside fired by a player. If someone is going to gank you - they want to do it with their alpha - as Concord will not help with that. Concord will blow them up after wards but it will not stop them from getting off that Alpha. THAT only matters if you're in a security zone where a) Concord will respond and b) will respond fast enough to keep them from getting off a Beta. Thus - a combination of your location and how good your tank is - might save you. Now here - you're not going to see them keeping you from warping - as if they are successful with their Alpha - that doesn't matter. Wrecks don't warp.

Damage Control Modules. The biggest effect these modules have - is on your hull. Thus, if you use one - you are primarily Hull Tanking. Here - fitting better bulkheads will increase your tank as it gives you more "hull" to tank. But these go in your Lows - so that's a MLU or two you can't use. What's more important to you?

One thing not mentioned - was mission mining. Many missions offer asteroids that can (could at least last time I was active) be mined. Being in some random spot anywhere in the solar system that they will have to scan down to find you - makes you more difficult to gank than someone sitting in a belt. The down side here - is that you will need an agent that can give you combat missions (not the mining missions (last I was playing)) and you may have to run a number of missions before you get one with some rocks in it. Also - the rocks you get are often going to be Veldspar. Read the miners bible and note the different mining and refining rates for the different rocks to appreciate why Veldspar is not such a bad choice though. If you are mission mining - then use your scan to watch out for combat scanner probes (unless this has changed which it may well have). If you are not in a system with L4 Agents and the battleships running their missions - you will probably not have ninja salvagers there scanning them down - as they are the ones you will routinely see doing that in High Sec.

There are lots of quiet systems. Look at the map and set the filters for pilots in space (or whatever it is now). Go where they aren't. You may have to look around some but you only get out of (many) things what you put into them. Think about the things you care about (security level, agents, rock types - whatever) - then look around for a system that fits you. Get to know the system and the people in and around it. If you start having a problem - leave. You are a miner - don't get into a pissing contest with someone. Keep a low profile. Don't be overly friendly with everyone - but don't be rude either.

Combat methods - active tanking, webs, warp scramblers, drones - those can be used but if you're using them on other players - you've probably already made a mistake. Mining ships are not combat ships. Now ... that said ... there is a video on You Tube of this guy running around in a tanked Hulk surprising gankers ... but then I don't know how long he got away with that.

If you make someone take notice of you - they can put you in their contacts list so they know when you are on - and use locator agents to find out where you are - then show up with their buddies - after finding you with a neutral character, possibly in a cloaked ship - they can warp right on top of you and - pow - you're ganked.

Mining is a PVP activity but it's more like a game of Cat & Mouse ... guess who you are ...

The old saw goes something like - "Doing everything right - won't guarantee you'll live - but screwing up - can increase the chances of your demise."

very simple steps I take while I mine with my retriever.
1. Jump to a belt in 10 -50 km range.... pick good spot in the belt if it's clear then save location on a rock closest to that location.
2. warp out and back in to the save location just mine everything... mining barrage chew through rocks so fast there is no reason to get picky.

3. IMPORTANT - > before you start mining or anything pick up safe spot like save location\sun\station and align to it. aligning means you can warp out the instant you see and non miner ships on your overview or a suspect ship getting near you.

4. Set up window mode for eve... you can use 60% of the screen to watch a video or surf the web while still watching on the overview, ore bay, drones and mining lasers progress so you are not really afk and you don't have to sit there doing nothing.
5. use flight of 5 scout drones I prefer warriors, just let them lose and call them back before you go the empty your cargo. they will destroy any rats on high sec.
6. use 3 shield rigs if you mine rocks... I use 2 rat specific (I mine on empire space so I know which rats i get) + shield extender rig so I can totally ignore the rats while my drones kill them..
7. once you killed the rats abandon all nearby wrecks... I heard that (never happened but heard it does) if your drones are aggressive and someone steal your loot they will attack him.. not good.

also awareness... one time I saw a venture getting into the belt then I thought let's have closer look as it was getting close to me and I noticed it didn't had any mining lasers... I started to warp out and moment I warped the ganker was in fleet with the venture warped 0 on him tried to shoot me but I was gone. so be careful... mainly... and align!

This is advice from a ganker that likes it when the prey fight back, because it means they are playing EVE, not ISK Progressquest.

Firstly, we don't usually fit warp scrams, for a few reasons.

1 - Long points use too much CPU. Even with my (very high) fitting skills, I cannot fit a long point without leaving an empty mid slot.
2 - Most of the prey are AFK anyway.
3 - I'd rather fit two Sensor Booster IIs (if flying solo) or 1-2 Remote Sensor Booster IIs (if flying paired and not on podcatching duty). SeBos reduce the time for the gankee to react.
4 - CONCORD response time is 19 sec in 0.5. Most miners do not react quickly enough to a gank attempt to align in time.

However some people will fit them.

Secondly, I love it when people use drones on autoattack. As I'm not a -10 pilot, (sec status is currently -0.2 and I keep repairing it) I avoid illegally podkilling miners. But when I illegally attack you (invoking CONCORD), your drones will attack me immediately. This creates a limited engagment under new Crimewatch laws, which means that me podkilling you is a legal attack. As such I end up getting your ship and pod, and suffering the ~-0.15 sec status hit for illegal destruction of property, but not the ~-1.7 sec status hit for murder.

Once CONCORD land on grid, they will immediately ECM jam me anyway (then kill me 2-2.5 sec later), so any damage you did (usually 30-40% of my shields) will not result in me getting less time shooting you.

Thirdly, your best bet is to be suspicious of everyone near you. Almost all New Order gankers have alts that can fly a mining barge (or at least a Venture) and will fly right up next to you, start mining, but will passively scan your fit, and sit conveniently 2km or less away from you. If another miner rocks up 2km away from you, you should EXPECT they are fleeted with one or more Catalysts and are providing a warpin for a ganker. Align immediately, deactivate lasers and prepare to warp out.

Fourth, use D-scan and local. If D400 or one of the other well-known gankers appears in your system, dock up. If you see multiple Catalysts in space, stay aligned at all times even if this reduces yield.

Fifth, use resist modules to tank. Don't use repair modules, they do almost nothing in a 19 second engagement, even an Ancillary Shield Booster won't do much. Resist rigs in particular are something that if I see on a scan, I will look elsewhere unless I have reinforcements handy.

Finally, if an extortion racket makes a demand of you - it's cheaper to give in than to refuse. On the weekend I took out a Retriever with a cheap fit and then popped the pod (silly person had drones on autoattack so no sec status hit), only to find I'd popped their presently nearly irreplaceable 4pc Genolution set. 1500m ISK lost at present (wildly fluctuating) prices for the CA-3 and CA-4 implants, which could have been saved by paying 10m to the New Order. Your mining systems may have additional taxes and/or protection fees, so check with anyone you suspect of being a ganker (a New Order permit only dissuades NO ganks, not Ministry of Love ganks or drunken TEST alliance Vindicator ganks).

Fly a skiff or procurer.

Procurer is cheap to replace.

Skiffs cost too much to gank.

You will NOT know you have been scanned.

pretty sure the passive scanner combined with the ship scanner module makes some sort of noise that the target can hear. It sounds like a prolonged locking beep.

Ive heard this when undocking from a station in a frieghter. Ive also heard this other times as well. pretty sure its the passive scanner...
