Why would removing the AH be necessary for the new expansion? Surely this would give them another opportunity to milk customers wallets as they have to buy new sets of legendary/unique items so they can get through the expansion in two hours and $300?

In a nutshell:

-11,000,000 copies sold.
-10,000,000 people stop playing because the AH is the cause of the poor drop rates. (Just trust me on this, because it's not worth the 50K word essay to explain why.)
-AH gone at the same time the expansion comes out along with proper drop rates and itemization.
-A good percentage of those 10,000,000 players come back and while they're there, they grab the expansion pack.

Or so the theory goes.

Because they have lost massive amounts of players from D3 - they are hoping the release on the PS3 (now) and the new expansion (March 2014) will revive the franchise. But they had a horrible, horrible launch followed by a really negative reaction to the influence the AHs (real money AH in particular) had on the game - everything from the loot mechanics to account security had multiple flamefests.

As noted above - they stand to make more money by selling an expansion and getting new/returning players into D3 than they do by selling an expansion just to the existing playerbase and trying to milk RMAH fees out of them.

Edit - yeah, what MrEpeen said!

I played D3 all the way through without buying stuff from the AH what pissed me off was the need to have a reliable Internet connection to play the game. Lag on my Internet connection meant I couldn't get far in hardcore.

So I guess the coming expansion will be a test of whether people will forgive and forget?

The only way I would come back to D3 is if I could play it without any network connection. I don't care about their silly AH.

No, I think he's serious.....

Actually, I think it would be a great thing for the game, but it's unlikely to happen.

Just an informational message that I hope CCP devs listen to:
The Devs at Diablo III have decided that the auction houses (fake gold and Real Money) are ruining the core game and have slated both versions of the auction houses to be shut off in about 6 months. Link.

Now, you have to realize that Blizzard gets 15% of all real money transactions - which you would think is a powerful incentive to keep those "features" intact. But the Dev team essentially stated that the auction houses have turned into a Pay2Win mechanism that is ruining the game, so much so that are willing to give up that 15% hard cash flow in lieu of a more player driven economy. This is the way it has been traditionally done. Like in Diablo II when the players stopped using gold and started using Stones of Jordan as currency - the players changed the in-game currency !!!

As CCP re-engineers the game with various expansions, I hope they learn from the lesson that Blizzard has learned the hard way.

Tbh, we told blizzard that the RMT auction house was a bad idea, they didnt listen during the beta. But i am glad they have made the decision to shut it down. Now they need to make D3 like the pre beta dev vids and i will be happy.

I think that many people ITT miss the point with D3.
Blizzard has learned from D2 and D3 experience that people playing D3 don't give rat's ass about anything resembling gameplay of an action game. Most people out there see the game as glorified slot machine. "Abilities? Mechanics? Who cares, give me my drops!" is all you can hear from "hardcore Diablo fans".

Of cource it kind of takes away from slot machine game if you can exchange 1000 garbage roll results for a single triple bar. That's why D3 AH is going away.

Meanwhile EVE's equivalent of RMAH which is PLEX system is working as intended...

TL;DR:

Players should ignore ISK and figure out their own currency.

Buy Solstice Project for PLEX4GOOD ! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&find=unread&t=301266 (this alt-character will get deleted once the sale is done, on 6th of december)

It's not a theory, although the way Mr Epeen here explains it makes it sound as if he's in the know on some big secret and he's here to share it with the world with a cheeky grin and a wink.

Basically, some beancounter or committee of beancounters higher up at Blizzard at some point made the decision to force the D3 design team to change the loot acquisition system from one of kill monsters ---> get cool loot to upgrade your character ----> be able to move on to kill more monsters (which is how ARPG games are supposed to work), to kill some low level monsters ----> get just enough loot to move on ----> monsters get more and more difficult but good loot becomes more scarce while bad loot piles up ----> new feature, gold auction house and RMAH start looking very tempting.

There's no tinfoil hattery on this. By introducing what they call "Loot 2.0" which will be coming out at some point in a patch before the new expansion drops and the auction houses close, the development team (and Blizzard as a whole) has admitted that this is how it went down. Not only that, but that the beancounters' little experiment with tinkering with the core ARPG loot reward gameplay mechanic was a ridiculously awful failure from just about every angle you could think to view it.

The game runs on their server, your local client is just a pretty interface. Try it when you have a very poor internet connection sometime, you get lag, rubber banding, unexpected death.
