missiles are indeed not a good choice for incursions. the reason is that things often die whiles your missiles are stil flying, thus wasting your damage. that said, for almost every other purpose missiles are absolutely fine.
also, take a look at the nightmare. it is a good incursion ship and you need caldari and amarr battleship kills for it.

You will probably never get into a decent incursion group running a missile ship, simply because things tend to die before your first volley hits them. Missiles are unique in that they take time to hit a target, whereas all other weapons systems deliver instant damage. The trade-off for this is that missiles have a 100% to-hit chance so long as the target is still within their range.

If you want to get involved with incursions, and want to have the best possible chance at joining an incursion fleet, look into training up your shield-related skills, and train into either railguns (which are popular turrets for Caldari ships). I'm not sure if Autocannons are used very often (Minmatar weapons), as I don't fly shield-fits.

Alternatively, you could go the armor route, and skill up your skills in energy weapons (lasers, AKA, Amarr weapons) and skill into Amarr and some Gallente ships.

But yes, for the most part, incursion groups don't use missiles as things tend to die too quickly.

Even if missiles aren't so good for incursions, make note that a lot of players(like myself) don't even bother with that part of the game. It's a terrible reason to write off a faction.

Moreover, any pilot worth their salt will do a lot of racial cross-training, especially since weapon specialization grants diminishing returns per time spent. That versatility from mild cross-training is especially vital in PVP.

Furthermore, Caldari are favored in other situations. The Drake and Tengu, both missile ships, are some of the most popular and effective PVE ships you'll find.

Finally, a starting character has mere hours worth of SP. The faction you choose has so little bearing on your skilling destiny that it's absolutely irrelevant which race you choose to start with.

Your friends telling you not to roll caldari warrant a dismissive wave of the hand, and a robust "feh!"

missiles do have one other advantage over turret weapons. Due to some quirk of the skill system if you want to train tech 2 battleship weapons (torpedos and cruise missiles) you do not need to train the tech 2 version of cruiser weapons, unlike turrets

This can cut your training time if you just want to jump to tech 2 BS weapons. Though this is balanced by both weapon options being different skills which you have to train twice.

When I first got into EVE, I started looking at different things to take part in. Incursions where one of those things. I was reading a lot about shield fleets (as I am a Caldari pilot). And these shield fleets comprised of a lot of Ravens.
Ravens are a shield and missile boat...

Is this still the case? Are they still used a lot in shield fleets?

And I am very much a missile and shield pilot myself so it good to know whats used in regards to ships used etc. Didn't know about the reasons the Navy Scorp is used though so that's handy to know.
