Right now there is an unused are of the SSP. Namely below the capacitor, above the speedo, on the same radial as the heat meters.

I propose adding a customisable cargo gauge to that area. Customisable as in you can make it one, two or three gauges, and can set each gauge to display free/used space in any cargo bay on your ship.

The 2 most useful implementations IMO would be as a jump feul meter for capitals, and as a ore meter for mining barges, so you dont keep having to bring up the inventory to check fuel/ore levels. In addition haulers would have an at a glance cargo level, and PVE/PVP ships carrying only ammo (as well as the new ammo only industrial) would have an ammo meter - and an Orca pilot doing station runs could see at a glance the levels in all 3 of his cargo holds (cargo, corp hanger, orebay)
