Have you looked at The Witcher (I prefer 1 to 2) for single player.

For MMO, I recommend The Secret World, although I am not a fan of the MMO part of it, it is well worth playing the story through.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the Final Fantasy series with all the spinoffs!

The latest Tomb Raider was just awesome. I believe they did an amazing job of creating a very believable and relateable set of characters -- absolutely fantastic job with Lara. Good story with a pretty good control and camera system. Beautifully done world.

Shadowrun Returns is also a pretty enjoyable way to pass the time. This one is a bit of a throwback to turn based combat and click-to-move days that pays homage to the table top game world. The main story is fun though player generated content can also be enjoyable.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is another turn based game that someone else mentioned that I'd also suggest. Along with the turn based strategy combat, you have research and item/facility build options as you progress through the game.

I had a lot of fun with Dishonored and I'd recommend that if you like the sneaky assassin type games.

Scary..i was about to suggest these two games my self Lol

Like with Rhivre i also prefer The Witcher 1, great game, a lot of fun, interesting story and nice for that "break" when you dont want to play with others.

The Secret World is well worth giving a try. The story is really interesting, the quests can make you either laugh your head off, or want to throw the computer out the window. The game it self is very dark, not "everyone is happy and everything is great",and because of the skill wheel you dont have to start a new character if you want to try a different combat style. Being a former WOW player im fed up with instances and raids my self, but i play it for the story and quests. You will also find quite a few EVE players there Big smile

Two more i will add, but they are both older games.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (yes, the third one, not 4-6 ).
This is a game that has kept me returning to it for..gah..10 years or so. Its nice when you just want to kill a couple of hours, and not looking for something that really occupies your time. Turn based strategy game but you cant be picky about the old graphics Smile

The Thief series.
Good story, and the gameplay really..draws you in. To the point that if someone talks to you, you whisper a response without thinking about it, and leaning around corners you lean over in real life P
And of course, its also refreshing to be "the bad guy" for once instead of the "hero" which you are in most games Smile

Edit.
If you have a taste for the more..unusual kind of games that makes you go "wtf.." Alice, madness returns is puurrrrfectTwisted

yeah TSW is quite a good game
the freeform progression system is kinda ok

there are places where it's extremely atmospheric
e.g.

theres a minor quest line to investigate a certain house ..
then the quest updates to "Investigate the cellar"
and I'm sat in my chair thinking ... but I don't want to go down there, bad stuff always happens in cellars!!

I can only think of one other game that has made me feel anything
which was Homeworld when you return to a burning world .. awesome choice of music for that

Skyrim - Mods, enough said. Brilliant modding community, and it has been taken down a notch from TESIV:O with a more streamlined leveling, crafting, and combat system.

State Of Decay - Some may say a DayZ ripoff, but a damn good one. Persistent world, with things happening, and resources being used...even while the game is not being played. Do not make the mistake of going 2 weeks without playing, lol. Also has perma-death, with you jumping into the role of a fellow survivor. Not sure if it is fully cross platform, though, and is not multiplayer.

DayZ - For many of the reasons from above, with the added excitement of MP.

Fallout 3 - My personal favorite game of all time (aside from EvE, but apples and oranges.) A real wasteland, compared to FO:NV, and again, some great mods out there.

Borderlands 2 - A hell of a loot-driven grind fest. Great story, and a couple really great DLC's. Co-op. Tight and precise shooting, an all-around awesome experience.

Bioshock Infinite - My game of the year.

GTA V - My game of the generation.

Those are my picks...enjoy.

I was always a sucker for strategy games. Especially Command & Conquer. I've replayed and beaten them games so many times, even years on I'm still addicted! If you've got a similar taste, maybe Civilization V is for you. I've not played it yet, but it's been suggested to me. I played the original Civilization many years ago but I've no idea what the more recent ones are like.

Besides that, I'm pretty out-of-touch with the "latest and greatest" too, if I'm honest. Sorry I can't offer any more input than that.

Good luck on your endeavour! :)

+1 for Command and Conquer... I was going to suggest starting with Red Alert, and pretending it's 1996, to better appreciate the experience.

Zombies!!!!!!

Project Zomboid - A Zombie sandbox where you just run around and try to make it through the day. It's very cheap and addicting. Still has a few bugs and lacking in certain features, but the developers are doing everything they can do fix it. Can only be bought on Desura so far, but when you've purchased it you get the option to get a key for activation on Steam.
7 Days To Die - Day Z (look below) mixed with Minecraft. Got kickstarted. Haven't played it myself but it looks interesting.
Day Z - For most this doesn't need an introduction. It's a modification for Arma 2 (stand-alone in production) where players are dropped in a large world and just try to scavange and survive against zombies and other players. From my experience the game has quite a few hackers, but it's a year or so since I played it.
State of Decay - Haven't played it myself but from the Let's Play-videos I've seen it looks quite fun.

Others

Europa Universalis 4 - Play as any country in the world from the 1400's to the early 1800's and do whatever you wish. Conquer Europe, colonize the Americas, become the Shogun in Japan... It's a series that I've been playing since Europa Universalis 2 and this release is easily the best one yet.
Dwarf Fortress - Develop a Dwarven colony somewhere in a randomly generated world. It's like Dungeon Keeper that has gotten steroids since it was just a small sperm. And it's free. It also has an adventure mode where you can do anything you please. Personally I've entered a familys house, killed the daughter, tore her arm off and beated the rest of the family to death with it. Good times.
Brutal Doom - A modification to Doom 2 that lives up to its name.
Arma 3 - As close to a military simulation as you can get. Worth mentioning that the campaign hasn't arrived yet, but it's still worth it. Highly recommended

Edit: Hope you find my post helps. I can recommend way more games when I get home from work if you wish. Smile

Thanks guys for the numerous suggestions Big smile

I'm not awfully fond of shooters, a bit of brainless killing now and then is always fun, but to a small degree only so it's great to see more tasty suggestions. I've really got a taste for Kingdoms of Amalur, don't know how long it is but it's cute.
I did sign up for Warframe too, but I need to give it a bit more attention to get an idea of it, it's somewhat odd to control.
I was quite appealed by the graphisms of Remember Me, but it's awfully short (less than 10h) and while the storyline is somewhat well rounded, it's a bit too cliché and I feel they had a pretty good concept but screwed it trying to make the game too mainstream IMO.

The Witcher: I bought a promo pack with both titles a while ago, I started playing the first, but I got a bit annoyed by the controls so I never made it very far. Might have to try again some day but I remember something really threw me back in the gameplay. If I remember correctly, you have to click the enemies for each attack and for some reason my char wasted a lot of time not even hitting anything.

Tomb Raider has been mentionned a few times too, I read quite some negative feedback, but perhaps it's still worth a try, got to look it up a bit more.

GTA and St Row have also been mentionned, but just from the universe they draw to, I don't really feel appealed, maybe if I spot a steam promo to keep the cost low.

The combat system takes a bit to get used too Smile
Might remember wrong here but pretty sure its accurate. When you fight something you click on the target once, and you will keep attacking the target even if you dont click on them again, but when the "attack symbol" turns into a flaming sword you click again and you will then get a stronger more advanced attack. So it takes a bit of timing but it works out ok.
You will also find that you need to switch between 3 combat styles (fast, hard and group). Hard is slow, thus you will miss faster creatures/people. Again takes some time to get used too.

You can also change the controls so its easier to move around on the first one. Playing on a laptop without a mouse means i have to use the touch pad which can cause difficulties in some games but thanks to the control options in Witcher this dident create any problems when i got used to it Smile

I need to get my nose back into it to remember exactly what made me grumble over the combat system, good reason to give it another try.

Also, I now have a laptop too, but I use a trackball on my computers, might want to give it a try to change from the touchpad. You don't need a hard surface to use it Blink
