so anyone that uses a mining barge knows you have the choice of tank or productivity.... ok thats not all the bad... but you cant fit an afterburner or microwarp without sacrificing both. mining barges had **** for fitting options... just saying its an option.

Yes, T1 mining barges suck. As a T1 specialized ship, they aren't meant to fit for squat. They fill an immediate role for newbs so they can make enough isk while training for better ships. They are meant to fill a void from mining frigate until you can trudge thru the long training queue to get to an exhumer.

The side to that is they are cheep. At max skills, one can be replaced for 20 hours of veldspar mining in HS (and even less if you mine other ores/ice).

Also, by the looks of your toon's history, I suspect you are now just getting to figure out the wonderful world of trade-offs when trying to fit a ship. Congratulations... most miners only fit their ships for max mining output, which explains why they make easy targets. I applaud you for being cognizant of other criteria. However, my best recommendations to you:

- Train as soon as possible to get into an exhumer. The fittings are less tight and they start specializing in other areas such as ore-hold vs. tank/survivability. Get a skiff if your worried about survivability.

- Always keep an eye on local and look out for gankers, reds, etc.

- Be situationally aware of anti-mining campaigns (I.e. don't mine during hulkageddon).

This has long been an issue with the industrial line, that they don't have a meaningful amount of fittings, meaning that you actually can't make trade offs, because most of those 'trade offs' require more fitting than you have on your ship.
Barges should have cruiser level fittings (being cruiser sized ships), allowing them to actually fit decent plates in the low slots if they want or a MWD to make bumping them hard etc.

Wapu is correct where high sec is concerned. Mining Barges will pretty much always just be a stepping stone to Exhumers.

Outside of high sec, it's a different matter. Mining barges have their place and also have various fitting options depending on circumstance. I use Mining Barges significantly more in nullsec than I do Exhumers.

Exactly. The yield from a retriever is only slightly less than a hulk... barring all lows are mining upgrades. Im not saying make the mining barges get too much extra powergrid and cpu... just enough to comfortably fit a few options. Cause right now unless your using ca 1 and 2 and power grid implants you dont see them fit for anything other than hauling ass when rats show up
