SE is breaking records, even after STOPPING SALES of it's new game FFXIV: ARR. The numbers posted are on par or better than currently online games such as COD:BOII and HALO 4, and some are saying even matching so WOW markets. Is FFXIV the next game to rule them all? Or is this a free month bubble? Even still, if FFXIV loses 5/6ths of it's current playerbase it will be equal to EVE in concurrent users. Not bad for a failed reborn MMO.

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise. Seek what they sought.

I'm absolutely loving the game at the moment...but no. It's good, great in fact, but it's not going to be "the next big thing." It's, for all intents and purposes, a pretty "standard" MMO. I think it'll do really well and it'll make Square Enix some serious cash, but it's not going to turn the industry on it's head by any means.

I don't think any MMO will change the industry ever again.

Too many acronyms involved for me to parse any meaning at all out of OP.

At this point, I don't expect any MMO to be Earth shattering. Maybe there will be some new tech or new flavors to enjoy for a time, but nothing that will really change the fact that being overly excited about an MMO is a thing of the past.

From a technology point of view, I've been following for quite a while the guy who made the voxel engine on which the new Everquest is based: Procworld, you can see here some very cool demos of what the engine is able to do.

And from a gameplay point of view, I've been reading some of the noises Smedley has been making about Everquest Next, and the reasons why they decided to scrap what they had and start all over again, and he comes across as a guy with the right sort of ideas.

Amongst all the other MMOs satisfied with cloning each other, Everquest Next does seem like an interesting breath of fresh air.
