About 4 years ago I posted something that upset a rather stupid man from Texas with my main. I didn't really care about my on-line presence to be honest back then.
Long story short, it was easy to link my main to my corp (obviously), which linked to our forums which I hosted, which has a domain name registered by me, of which a simple whois will provide my details.

I got a very angry, drunken call off this gentleman at a stupid hour in the morning (due to time difference between the UK and US), which pissed my wife off quite a bit.
It was all rather surreal. He rang a few times and I could barely make out what he was saying - it was only because he said who it was (his eve name) that it made any sense later.

Anyway, I managed to do the same to him - his Eve name was very easy to link to his real info. I found his Facebook, friended him with a fake, hot, female account I setup and grabbed as much info about him as I could.

I then filed a police report against him in his local town. I'll tell you what - the American police are awesome to Brits. They love the accent or something.
They went around, had a word and threatened him with arrest if he harassed us again.
He apologised and I never heard from him again. I'm actually fairly sure he doesn't play Eve these days.

Incidentally, I now find drunken Texas people hilarious. They all sound like this to me.

But it's mainly done because it's easier to be brazen and anonymous with an alt. Kinda hard to be held responsible for forum shenanigans if no one knows who you are.

I post with my main!

^ Yep. And also because you might want to try out a risky joke/satire troll. One that might horribly fail. If it falls flat, your posting alt takes the shame and embarrassment, instead of your main. Pathetic, I know, but some of us trolls in training lack confidence.

If your corp prevents you from posting you should leave your corp.

I post with my alts alt

If you've never tried PvP in EvE it's quite possible you've missed out on one of the greatest rushes available in modern gaming.

I got a guy who keeps sending me poorly written, nonsensical hate mail because of my posting. He's stopped sticking bounties on me though, I think they got too expensive for him what with me dying fairly regularly.

Because it bothers people. It's a fairly easy way to get tears, and if you're gonna troll, you might as well troll hard.

My sig alone has gotten me a fair amount of tears.

Unless you've spent your entire 30 years of life on the receiving end of not just the words but the intentions of insensitive arseclowns who would sooner laugh at you then employ you, you couldn't possibly understand the effects it can have. You call it butthurt, I call it justified retribution, perhaps even an education for the insensitive arseclown.

In a nutshell: Doxing

Doxing is a technique of tracing someone or gather information about an individual using sources on the internet. I myself have gotten caught up in a flame war before, not in this game but another one years ago- and someone actually went to the trouble to find out my RL name, occupation and post these details on public forums trying to troll/attack me.

Since then, whenever signing up for anything online I use a bogus name and freshly created fake name email address

I didn't originally, I tried to clarify with you in a private mail, where you still maintained your ignorance. Anyway, I know it's quite a cliched thing to say around here, but the number of people that have seen your comments and mails are quite widespread, and include the likes of TAXU and my own alliance, to name but a few people who have you on watchlist now. You might be better off just never logging any of your "3K" alts on ever again.

Cuz we're not gonna dec you. There'd be no surprise if we decced you.

Have fun.

Wow, that is some serious butthurt to try and go irl on somebody. Not to mention a probable crime. I do hope you got your constables involved.

Ah more idle threats! I love it! I maintained my ignorance to what? I told you that some people use disablities to not work and its BS. Not my fault that you think I was bashing the mentally handicap or people that can't actually work when they actually have something wrong with them but there are plenty of jobs out there that even people with autism can do. You got angry about me calling those jobs menial but in reality a menial job to me is actually a good thing for someone with autism as it gives them maybe this sense of pride that they are doing something for society and gets them interacting with people. You'd rather lock them up and not let them out and thats why we do actually have those people that make fun of them. Its unfortunate that you are too ******** to understand this and think I'm too insensitive.
