Roll-up Roll-up come one come all! for all of them that might dream of that once in a lifetime offer..

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Planet-HD-189733b-/251330413023?pt=Land&hash=item3a8475c1df

According to the local evening snoozepaper paper (Manchester Evening News) the sale is offered by an aspiring film-maker looking to finance his £1.5m sci-fi comedy movie project, cash will be used to finance production and filming with a host of "Big name Hollywood Stars" including Def Leppard's lead singer Joe Elliot already signed up.
There is a starting price of $1000 (£643) but if you have a cool $2m (around £1.3m) burning a whole in your pocket you can walk away with it now..LolLolLol

The seller (Carl Whitley) states that "the planet is unoccupied and in a never been used pristine condition" and "is the perfect back-up plan should Earth ever be destroyed" but is unable to transport any potential buyer there as it is some 63 light years away (some 370,353,409,098,649 miles as the Crow flys)

Just looked up some info on the planet itself to find that it was discovered in 2005 in the constellation of Vulpecula by French astronomers, is a deep blue in color and orbits at around 341,000 mph but is thought to be too hot to sustain life with scientist predicting surface temperatures in excess of a scorching 1000C.

I expect that our budding director will soon be opening an Eve account so as to double all your isk just for the sake of being a nice Guy.

Les

Ownership of space bodies is both forbidden by international treaties and not acknowledged by nations.

So essentially anyone who claims to owe a space body, owes nothing.

(and, being factual... who would agree on a individual's claim on a whole planet?)

Is this how Frieza (from DragonBall Z) started his planet trade, by going to Spacebay? P

How exactly do they know it's uninhabited? What would happen if by some means we are able to travel there and there is in fact a civilization there. Do I own them now?

Not that it matters, like Ishta says, nobody can actually lay claim to a extraterrestrial body. The guy is just selling you a really expensive novelty deed.

That silly movie "Avatar" should give you an idea.
Except that with me (and probably anyone with more than one braincell) as Commander those silly blue smurfs would have been wiped out.
After all, if you can fly though space, it´s probably not like you can´t slap a few guns on your spaceships as well.

But even if you don´t have any, just loading up your ships with a few tons of crushed rock, getting in a position a few kilometers directly above them, then opening your cargobays should do the trick just fine...

From Wikipedia

Quote:
HD 189733 b, more formally HD 189733 Ab[citation needed], is an extrasolar planet approximately 63 light-years away from the Solar System in the constellation of Vulpecula, the Fox. The planet was discovered orbiting the star HD 189733 A on October 5, 2005, when astronomers in France observed the planet transiting across the face of the star.[4] HD 189733 b was the first extrasolar planet for which a thermal map was constructed,[1] to have its overall colour determined (deep blue),[1][5] and to have carbon dioxide in its atmosphere. With a mass 13% higher than that of Jupiter, HD 189733 b orbits its host star once every 2.2 days at an orbital speed of 152.5 kilometres per second (341,000 mph), making it a hot Jupiter with poor prospects for life as we know it.

It is a very hot gas giant that is in no way habitable. So this is, infact, a massive scam!

mmm, I wonder if selling an EVE planet on eBay would be against EULA. Would it count as RMT? Need to do some research, but shhhh, don't tell anyone....

This does raise an interesting question about the ownership of moons and other planets in this solar system. Are their laws in place that prohibit the sale of say, Phobos and Deimos, or Jupiter?

There is a treaty that forbids ownership of space bodies, and signing nations acknowledged to not uphold any such claims.

Of course, that may change as soon as someone sets a foothold somewhere, but theoretically nations could only claim the surface occupied by their installations i.e. your territory is your building (like a ship in a port abroad). Surely the pressure to extend sovereignty to "colony premises" will be strong as soon as such colonies are feasible and economically interesting.

The first practical claim of ownership is going to go to the nation that can put a big gun on it or a warship around it. Laws will then follow to confirm it. Those laws could be subject to change if a better warship blows up the old one.

It will probably be private corporations that get their first at this point in time but the same path you outline will be followed.
