Caldari ships and asymmetry!

Some of Caldari ships look so asymmetrical, disproportioned and uneven in an absurd way. Take the Raven as an example, it looks so dumb that flying it doesnt even feel like a battleship, why shouldnt its left side look like the right side too? I wonder what has been going in the designer's mind at the time of its creation! Is there certain logic or explanation with these?

Perhaps lore?

Minmatar dont care how their ships look as long as they dont fall apart.
Caldari dont care how their ships look as long as they are efficient.
Gallente loves smooth curves and up close and personal.

There is no atmosphere in space, there is no need for symmetry.

Not from the drag, but the mass still affects ship's balance. So the shape of the ship may be decided by whatever the center of mass is. Perhaps with Raven, the smaller wings simply have far more mass per m3 than the large wing side.

You really should try Kerbal Space Program if you want to see a nice simulation of what can go wrong with that statement.

For spaceships you usually dont want your main engines to make the ship spin. And its going to spin if the combined force of your engines does not line up with the center of mass.

While its possible to make that happen with asymmetric designs it gets a lot more complicated and you're more likely to end up with engines that can't be fully used while flying straight.

Fortunately its not important for games like eve to have spaceships that look realistic.

I am less worried about symmetry and more concerned about the lack of

Most of the vertical ships look fantastic.

Well all ships can't be vertical but the Heron and Nightmare come to mind.

The lack of asymmetry never really bothered me, I still think the Raven looks nice.

Surprised the Moa wasn't used as an example, though I suppose it doesn't bear repeating.

As much as I love Caldari ships I'd have to agree. I mean, just look at the Merlin and Hookbill, they look nice.

I actually like the moa look although I admit that it is an acquired taste due to flying a gila a lot in my younger years.
The raven on the other hand has design that I have liked every since I first noticed it's new look. The original Raven model was horrendous on the other hand.

The only beef with the Raven that I have is texture. The first raven I flew since probably 2006 was a navy raven I just bought for the recent cruise missile changes and I love it's look. I decided to buy a t1 raven for disposable purposes and the texture just looks exceedingly cheap.

A million times this, it's a beautiful design. It's kind of cubist-inspired, perhaps. The larger side suggests the blur of a wing's movement and the asymmetry combined with the wing clearly shows the figure of a literal raven in flight when you pull your camera view out.

There are quite a few gorgeous ship designs in this game that could never be practical but I'm not sure that this is something that is important. We're not playing a flight simulator; this is a science fiction MMO, plain and simple. Perfect symmetry in artistic design has a real danger of giving the viewer a flat, uninteresting experience - so the art team has given us a very nice mix of the conventional/symmetrical and the artistic/asymmetrical/crazy. Since we, the capsuleers, are our ships, I appreciate that diversity.

The Merlin and the Hookbill are both sweet looking ships. Yet some of the asymmetrical ones are pretty cool. I personally love the look of the Manticore, it just looks badass. The Raven is a pretty decent looking ship as well; there may be some texture issues with it's skin, but once those launchers open up that becomes irrelevant to me.

Come hell or high water, this sick world will know I was here.

I agree with both of you, Merlin and Hookbill look great, and yes even though Buzzard and Manticore are not symmetrical they dont look like Frankenstein, hell even the Osprey's aesthetics can be explained because of its repair role which still looks sweet, most others are simply a joke.
