So it's out and it's awesome as expected. Which faction have you chosen to play.

I am Athens and formed an alliance with Sparta to fight Epirus. I'm gonna have fun with this.

Update

Epirus is now crushed and Sparta became uppity when I went to fight Macedon. After one battle they became more compliant and now I am consoldating again.

Moar Update

Macedon and Sparta were no match for my Athenian armies. Confusingly the last gasp of Spartan resistance was to rush my capital with 33 dudes?

i got it too. lol

funny what you picked to start! i went almost the same route. i am sparta who formed an alliance with athens...to fight epirus. but i finished them off already. haven't decided what to do next. i think i will take the fight straight into romes teeth and invade italy. they are much stronger than me at the moment. should be challenging. Smile

enjoying it a lot so far. i think it's the best TW game in the series to date. (previous favorite was empire)

Carthage.

At war with a tribe in central Iberia with the aid of one of my protectorates. Rome is playing up but they seems to not want to tangle with the carthagian fleets.

i changed my plan. i initiated trade with rome. very profitable...seeing as spartans seem to suck at making money on their own i'm content to take it from those that want wine and marble lol. alliance is strong with macedon and athens. crafted a sort of a new corinthian league situation i've got going on. and i am initiating a sicilian invasion before the romans decide to do so...starting with the belligerent and undesirable syracuse.

So, does the AI suck as bad as in all other TW games?

Typically it seems better, though on occasion makes some very odd decisions

Don´t get my sarcasm wrong, I actually liked the original TW:Rome very much and the Europa Barbarorum Mod made it basically a new (and awesomely realistic) game, but at the end of day, once you had a stable base, it was just kind of.... "mopping up" the map since the Computer never managed to adequately defend. Or attack. Or develop. Or avoid getting his Generals slaughtered. On all levels of the game. (No to mention the complete inability to get an invasion going across the sea.)

On the positive side, I liked the Barbarian Invasion expansion, finally there were those mega-battles I was looking for....

I am in year 14 of the iberian campain. While I dominate the seas I was soundly defeated on land in the first years. My city was assaulted 4 times but between me and my nova cartha darlings we have pushed back and secured central iberia. Meanwhile my other protectorate lybia was assaulted by roman a roman funded african alliance. After heavy losses and the fall of several towns my royal army managed to capture their fortress capital. My fleet now blocades their port cities while hanibal leads my main force from the south. They attempted to headshot carthago herself with a massive fleet but were soundly crushed in the harbor and were forced to land outside the wall and were annialated before the gates. With rome busy fighting a well timed slave revolt its only a matter of time before africa is secured and my forces can turn on iberia in full.

The AI is much improved.

Wow! It does sound like the AI is much better. You guys have more details to share on how the diplomacy AI works? Sounds like it's not as much as an On-Off switch as in the other MTW games.

diplomacy is a lot better. there are many more options. non aggression pacts, defensive alliances, offensive alliances. for the first time you can actually request as part of a political deal that a faction break away from a specific part of their arrangements with other factions. options aren't precluded due to whoever you are dealing with being allied to someone you are at war with or your allies are at war with.

one thing that sort of annoys me is that it seems most faction are adverse to trade...wtf...do they hate money?

the agent options are far more in depth too. if you want to assassinate someone there are various methods for that and your agents can specialize in certain forms of shady behavior.

I love this game! I never played the first title so this is my first time and its a blast. The only issue I have is the long wait time between turns. I started with rome and had to pull all my legions back home due to slave revolts maybe because i either enslaved or killed all my enemies.

it's due to enslavement that slave unrest gets higher. slaves are good for the economy...but too many creates trouble. i don't keep very many. i think you accumulate them naturally over time even without taking them in war. operating from that assumption...i started killing every captive i took. then i started mixing it up between killing and releasing them.

one bit that is missing is that you can't request another faction to stop a war against another. i wish they had that.

i've been lurking over at the totalwar forums and it seems a lot of people are having issues with the game and are complaining with much vim and vigor about glitches and shortcomings. i haven't really noticed many issues. slight graphical things...but i expected that. my once great game system is getting on in years and has been upgraded about as much as it can be. i've also noticed that the a.i in battles can make odd decisions now and then. but nothing major that i am sure will be addressed as time goes on.
