Minerals have dropped because noone is building battleships any more (except for the old tier 3 ones) because of the Odyssey changes to the number of minerals used to produce them.

Adding to this, a lot of dreads and carriers were built and rigged with the Large T2 rigs before the Capital rigs were introduced. Not sure how much effect this has had, but I guess all the factors mentioned so far add up to create the big changes you have noticed.

Yeah that's true too, hadn't considered that factor. There's also the recent battlecruiser balancing which caused huge stockpiling - in short, there are literally enormous stockpiles of many of the ships that use the largest amounts of minerals to build.

If there's say 250 trillion ISK worth of additional battleship builds that happened pre-Odyssey (which is only about a million hulls, it could even be more), and 150 trillion ISK of capitals, and 100 trillion ISK of battlecruisers left in stockpiles from the previous balance pass, that would explain a major depression in demand now.

This.
Patch notes, mineral rebalance, dump stock or build like mad, attempt to sell, flooded market, massive stockpile, low price.

A good point at Wikipedia: Opportunity costs:

"Thus, opportunity costs are not restricted to monetary or financial costs: the real cost of output forgone, lost time, pleasure or any other benefit that provides utility should also be considered opportunity costs".

Mining is so much fun!

As we are speaking, the next round of stock piling is probably in its latter stages ...... i mean the Tech1 industrial rebalancing changes. Although i dont know the know the new numbers of blue print and mineral cost and haven't found them anywhere in the forums.

Null sec corps seems to be more interesseted in renting space these days. So if there is a bigger supply in minerals i would guess it comes out of renter space. But only the barge gankers may know exactly if there is an increased number of roid afk miners in high sec.

To post something productive: No mineral changes have been announced as far as I know but I cannot be arsed to check on the test server.

I resubbed after taking a five month break and noticed that minerals have crashed? What is going on? What I've read is that CCP nerfed ice mining, so AFK miners are now mining minerals. And null sec got buffed with extra minerals. Is this right?

It's all part of the new "resource rebalance" and making sure more mins are available everywhere. Good news for the "Supply" side of things.

Bad news is, not much in the way of a corresponding "Demand" increase but that's to be expected since the cries for more mins began during the heyday of the massive cap production boom.

Fast forward to present day and, well, the drop in Orca and freighter prices (even with losses due to ganking) also shows that we're up to our hips in increasingly cheap mins.

Add to that the fact that barges are safer to fly than ever, and one could begin to make a case for economic stagnation.

Or not.

Great time to buy cheap mins, though, if you're a "silver lining" kind of guy.

I strongly disagree, since they are still dropping lower.

Unless this is a manipulation attempt! In that case I strongly second your statement and recommend anyone to buy some "cheap" minerals. Now is the time to go all in!

They are also boosting gravimetrics sites in 0.0 (new ore composition + 5% ores in higher security systems gravimetrics) .... so can we expect even further mineral drop ?
