Like anyone new... I started this character and I was recommend to train all the core skills before I start anything else. But, it became months later and I got tired of paying for the sub.

Now with dual training... he is out of the mothball list and back in action. Sorta?!?!?

I wanted to put this guy in a corp like Agony or something similar that only deals with small gang and cruiser and below ships.

To be useful in PVP... at what point should I switch to per/wil remap to get me out there in lowsec. I have time to spare but I want to try the other part of the game that i never really experienced.

My questions are: (With the thought of flying shield and armor ships... also I thought about doing the insta lock tackle or ewar guy)
1. Do shield comps need to be to 5?
2. Shield compensation and Tactical shield manipulation to 5? (TSM is a long train.)
3. Do armor comps need to be to 5? Or is 4 good enough at first?
4. Any thing else that needs to be trained up before I switch? (I know there are a lot of things but I am asking for the must haves.)
5. For the ewar side of things... I plan to train ecm and damps. But should I hit painter and weapons disruption too?
6. Since im thinking ewar... does that mean ONLY caldari? Or does anyone recommend training another race? Like Caldari and Gallente? (Since they share the same gun platform...)

Any recommendations overall would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance...

1) From what I've seen, shield comps are useless in PvP. Hardly anyone uses passive shield hardeners.
2) TSM to 4. Shield Comp 4 probably
3) 4 is good
4) Navigation, Engineering, Electronics. WU, AWU4. SU 4
5) might as well.. only need to 3ish to use them decently. get the adv. upgrades for each if you plan to use them more.
6) ewar is caldari, but i'd train up other races. you'll get bored from just flying one race all the time.

Why do you need to remap to start into low? I'd just get out there. You have a fine remap and your core skills look good overall. Start training gunnery and/or missiles and just get going.

Oh, and throw in Thermodynamics. Overheating is rather important in the scheme of things.

But yeah, why do you think you have to remap? Totally min/maxing skill training on your main usually isn't a good idea until much later in the game. Int/Per is a decent all around remap; just get out there and use it without totally focusing on SP/hr.

ECM takes a long time to train. Almost 2 months for ECM alone... do you want to wait that long?

I guess my thoughts were to train "efficiently" versus with a low sp per hour.

1. Not at all. In fact, you probably won't lose anything much skipping the 4 shield compensation skills. They were barely useful when they used to give some minor bonus to turned-off active shield hardeners. Now that they were changed to only affect passive shield hardeners, in PVP they were all but useless. In PVE, there used to be some very niche uses for L5 solo tanking fits, but now that mission rats had been changed to use Sleeper AI, that niche disappeared. The only current use of passive shield hardeners that I can think of is to tank your AFK hauler.

2. Shield Compensation depends whether you want to eventually fly ships using active shield tanks. TSM 5, there is an eternally-ongoing debate whether training TSM to 5 (instead of stopping at 4) can actually have adverse effect towards your tank by preventing bleed-out damage to armor. As such, I personally do not recommend training TSM to 5 until this debate (which has been going on for years without resolution) is settled.

3. Unlike 4 shield comp skills, the 4 armor comp skills are actually pretty crucial. Training them to 4 is almost mandatory for dedicated armor tanker, while getting them to 5 can be a good long-term future goal once you get more crucial skills done. The reason being these armor comp skills improve EANM and the energized plating hardeners.

5. It is up to you. In small gang situations, I personally found TDs more useful more often than damps.

6. Caldari's specialized ewar is ECM. They don't get bonused ships for the other 3 ewars. I don't see why you would only limit yourself to Caldari, especially after you mentioned that you would train for both armor and shield tanks. Other than the ECM ships, no Caldari ships use armor tanking.

Ok let's try this again.

I will not answer to your questions as some good people already answered it and I agree with everything said.

I will just go through all the skills tied to your remap and point out what you should try to do before going per/wil.

1. Electronics

Electronic Warfare - bring it to lvl 4 at least. Lvl 5 if you want to be dedicated ECM pilot.
Frequency Modulation - bring it to lvl 4 at least. 10% falloff/lvl to all ewar modules!
Long Distance Jamming - bring it to lvl 4 at least. 10% optimal/lvl to all ewar modules!
Propulsion Jamming - bring it to lvl 4 at least. I would go to lvl 5 though as this skill lowers cap use for all ewar modules.
Sensor Linking/Signal Suppression - skill for sensor booster/damper. - bring it to 3 or 4 (first skill on 4 is prereq. for second)
Signal Dispersion - bring it to 4. ECM skill
Weapon Disruption/Turret Destabilization - Skill for Tracking Distruptor. VERY useful in PVP! bring it to 3 or 4.
Target Painting/Signature Focusing - Skill for Painter. used usually in PVP with bombers mostly. bring it to 3 or 4
Various Sensor Compensation skills - bring to 4. it is fast and useful for PVP.

2. Engineering

Various Shield compensation skills NOT WORTH spending time on right now.
Energy Emission Systems - bring it to 4 for NOS/Neut. Very useful in PVP
Shield Compensation - to 4
Tactical Shield Manipulation - bring it to 4 to be able to use T2 invu.

3. Mechanics

Various rigging skills - bring to 3 or 4.
Armor Honeycombing - to 4 if you will be in armor ships
Various Armor Comp. - as said before VERY useful in PVP for armor tanking. 4 is a must. train to 5 if you are not in hurry.
Repair Systems - to 5 is a must.
Nanite Interfacing/Nanite Operation - for repairing damaged modules from overheting. not very important for you right now imho. can train later.

4. Navigation

Fuel Conservation to 4. 5 is nice to have but not necessary.

5. Science

Infomorph Psychology - train it for more clones. New skill for more than 5 clones will need this skill to 5.
Thermodynamics - bring it to 4, but 5 is nice to have for full time PVPer

That is it imho. It is not short but if you endure, you will stay on your next remap for ships/weapons for a long time not needing anything else from int/mem remap.

Furthermore, if you are planing to do missions with this char you can do Social skills on this remap.

I hope this helps you.

Best,
GS

Honestly if you are looking at small gang pvp you want to make sure you can fit and use:
afterburners
webs
warp scramblers

Those are the things most small gangs are going to want the newbies to be able to do.

Thank you all for the replies and for your time.

Im definitely going to get this on an evemon plan and see how long this will take.

Im probably going to take up the Caldari/Amarr route so I can at least utilize HAMs on both ship platforms.

Whoever told you to max out your core skills before doing ANYTHING else was an idiot. It is a good idea to get some of them to 5 asap, esp. Mechanics/Engineering/Electronics, and WU + AWU4 due to reducing fitting issues, but there is no reason not to hop into a ship and get into the action even if you can barely fly it. That is, as long as you can affort to lose said ship ;)
