Assault Ships Salvage - an Experiment

I read another thread the other day that casually mentioned that Assault Frigates often give more salvage than the ship is originally worth; this let me to think of a possible 'unique' way to make ISK (although I'm sure others have thought of this before).

1. Purchase assault frigates and abandon them in space
2. Come back with a BS fitted with a gun or two and a bunch of salvage modules
3. Convert said frigates to salvage using a combination of guns and salvage modules
4. Sell for more and make ISK!

I learned a couple of things during this experiment:

1. It could be chance, but ships that you self destruct followed a pattern of not leaving any salvage other than metal scraps
2. Insurance is still paid out when you eject and then destroy your own ship
3. It feels wrong to kill your own innocent fleet of 5 Assault Ships sitting in the middle of nowhere, minding their own business...

The results:

In the first batch of 6 frigates, 5 of them dropped intact armor plates. Selling for 30-32M each, along with insurance payouts and other trivial salvage pieces, this netted a profit of 45,587,800 ISK. Amazing, you say! Not so fast...

The second batch was not so good. Only 2 intact armor plates dropped, for a loss of 51,273,676 ISK. Bummer.

I had a net loss of about 5M ISK when all was said and done. It was interesting though, and I'm tempted to expand the experiment. The first 6 made that ISK so quickly, it was some of the best ISK/hour I've seen (about 300M ISK/hour based on the time it took...). It was pretty fun to do, although very random.

Anyways, anyone else going to repeat this little experiment? Let me know how it goes.

I think it's usually done with interceptors, not AFs. You might have better luck with those...

Well, each AF costs about 23 Mil + another 2.9 Mil for insurance; you get a nearly 8 Mil payout, + 30+ Mil when you get the armor plate drop. A profit of 11-12 Million ISK per ship when you get the drop. Anyone done this with interceptors? What do they drop?
