speaking for myself, the whole item hangar thing was solved the instant I saw the "merge ship and item hangars into station window" option.

For the life of me I can't figure out why that isn't active by default.

WAIT WHAT

Yes, most windows act like browser tabs, in that you can pull them down and drop them into another interface to merge them.

To be fair it's usually those little things which are the most frustrating.

Ohh now I've mined stuff too. Beautiful game to look at. I'll see where this all leads. Just that one frustrating part so far...hopefully all goes well from here on out. Positive thoughts! POSITIVE THOUGHTS!!!!!

Remember to poke around at the various menus a lot. Many tools and utilities are hidden in odd places. Right click everything - even open space; Context menues are everywhere. Be prepared to look for answers - EVE is notoriously terse in its instruction and help, but what you're looking for, if it exists at all, can be found with some dilligence.
Don't forget to look at external sites as well - much is explained externally that you'd have to otherwise learn the hard way.

I cant complete the first tutorial set for exploration. Been at it an hour. Apparently I need a Proof of Discovery: Gas Passkey to access the acceleration thingy to get the Proof of Discovery: Gas. But I do not have a Proof of Discovery: Gas Passkey. Nor am I able to find it. Kind of frustrating.

I am kind of wondering if the game is worth playing if even simple tutorials are no love situations.

-I have asked for help in game and no one really knows what I am talking about. Hell, I'm new enough I don't know what the right words are.

-Meaning I have also googled, but there is no love there.

I only have 22mleft on probes...not too sure how to get new ones. Like a complex game, but, well I am not having fun at this point which is why one plays a game.

Any help for newb appreciated.

First and foremost, remember not to GasPass while in your pod. The results are.... unpleasant.

Seriously, welcome to EVE. Don't get discouraged. The little details can trip you up at first, but it doesn't take too long to get past that. Plus, there's plenty of friendly, if not off-key help available.

That's very true. And ironically, they come up the most when you're dealing with missions and NPCs, which is what you tend do when newest to the game.

OP, it gets easier as you go. Eventually you start intuitively knowing where to search around for stuff.

some tips to make life easier.

1. almost all high sec corps are worthless. hardly anyone logging in. corp chat is dead. everyone plays seperately. Finding a decent corp is a huge deal and hard to do.

2. passive income is hugely important. Planetary interaction, manufacturing, research, moongoo and a few other i am sure i am forgetting are examples. lots of people will tell you this. you will ignore them for too long.

3. Eve Uni has some excellant guides to most topics both written and youtube based.

4. Do NOT mine.

5. Do NOT become a hauler.

6. The missions are a useful start /intro to combat mechanics but they are a dull dull dull way to make isk. Find a better way asap.

7. Everything written in local at a trade hub is a scam. Do NOT think you have found a bargain or a samaritan you have not.

8. get into exploration or wormhole diving or faction warfare or pirating or null sec pvp or suicide ganking asap.

9. Now is the best time to start learning to PVP. make all your early mistakes in T1 frigs and you will learn some very important lessons cheaply. Thinking you can learn PVP later with an expensive ship is the WORST plan.

10. Seriously lose a few ships to other players. The adrenaline rush from EVE PVP is not found in other games.

11. If you must mission looting and salvaging the wrecks is better isk than the mission reward. You can make a decent salvage /loot boat with a destroyer but when finally you switch to a noctis because everyone nagged you you will wish you had done it months before.

12 Do not rush into bigger ships. Bigger is not better in EVE. Most battleships will struggle to hit a frigate for example and many people have lost battleships to solo frigs because they didn't truely understand this.

13. http://www.evealtruist.com/ a great guide to all sorts of combat mechanics

14. http://www.minerbumping.com/2013/08/the-new-order-ends-soon.html an example of emergant gameplay

15. http://flight-of-dragons.blogspot.co.uk/ a blog about a newbie learning to PVP (in his case very well)

In summary.
Eve is not about grinding like so many MMO's although many people make it so.
Eve is about communities and the narrative arc they create for themselves. Find a community that appeals and become part of their arc or make one of your own if you prefer

Evelopedia is cool, look around in the middle of the homepage and you'll see guides. Open it and youll see a whole mess of guides on different subjects, and by mess I mean hot mess. The most important one is crimewatch imo. Also, if you ever try courier contracts don't be dumb like me and get popped at a camp. They Do bait in this game.

Okay, apparently my little dude decided to place the passkey in his Item Hangar in the big starting thingy station....and not on his ship, which he would soon be using. So all good. Happy times....

I did the exact same thing when I first started playing. Took me about as long to figure it out, too.

Hah, it takes a new player an hour to figure out how to view the item hanger.

Speaks volumes about the unified inventory's user friendliness. That interface sorely needs at least an incremental update, I mean it works fine but honestly it goes against so many UI design principles that it's incredibly non-intuitive. Intuitive design, not just simple streamlining, is the #1 thing for improving the new player experience.

I wonder how long it takes a new player to intuitively determine how to optimize a waypoint route (imo, a very important function to the game).

I'm sure there are some newer players reading that weren't aware of the feature. Go log into Eve, set a few waypoints, and try and optimize the route. Come back and say how long it took. For science!

Yeh this new(old) inventory system drive me mad, hundreds clinics to get hanga, you click on hanger icon and it default open ship hangar, stupid...can't get use to it. Oh well look like peapol in Iceland have diffrent view on 'ergonomics' and 'usability'

The tutorial is anything but mandatory.
Just get out there and try to figure out what you would like to do yourself.

This is not the type of game where your progress gets halted by a bug in a linear plot line.

There are greater rewards to be had if you start thinking outside of the box.

The best thing about the tutorials are free ships and free skillbooks.
You can live without them.

Decide if you want to burn a day or so doing tutorials, or if you're happy just plunging in, all green and wet-behind-the-ears.
Either way works, one is more exicting than the other.

Although I symphatize with the OP's desire to play EVE, I think he's in for a world of pain.

When I started playing, I felt awesome about finishing the tutorials.

Then I blew up cos the free loot had a price. Then I lost 3 containers cos they apparently needed to be anchored. Next my new corp protected me by podding me the moment I jumped in system with them.

1. The EvE learning curve is accurately depicted at the top of this post. Everyone goes through it. There is no shortcut. Accepting the fact that your butt cheeks will be spread wider than nature intended in the coming weeks is the best way to prepare mentally for the journey you have embarked on. Embrace it.

2. As soon as you can, buy and hop into a rifter and go down to losec. Shoot people and get shot. Again and again. Do this until your cheeks aren't getting spread as much. (see point 1). Do this early, do it often, and your longevity in the game will increase exponentially, as you save yourself from acquiring the false expectation that you will never get zapped as long as 'x'.

3. Join a player corporation that teaches newbs. Social play is best play. You again neuter your longevity if you try to play solo. Burnout inevitably follows.
