Windows 8 hard shutdown breaks EVE launcher

I just wanted to post this symptom and my fix in case someone else has the same issue. My wife blew a circuit in the apartment and hard shutdown my machine (EVE was either on the launcher landing page or in the process of loading the game. I can't remember). When I booted my computer back up the EVE launcher said something like "you are not connected to the internet or something went wrong loading."

I tried to google the problem using https://google.com (notice the https) and I got a message saying googles certificate is not trusted. After a bit more looking I found that my calendar had switch to August 17th, 2095!! The certs are expired because my clock is too far into the future. I suspect EVE uses some kind of certs as well which is why the launcher failed.

Anyways, here's the fix.

Window 8:
1. Hit Windows Key + R
2 Type "cmd" without quotes and hit enter
3. In t he command prompt type 'date' then the current date in the format MM/DD/YYYY. Example: "date 08/17/2013"
4. After you press enter check the calendar found at the bottom right of your screen for the correct date.
5. Relauch the launcher.

I'm not sure if window 7/Vista has issues with the dates on hard shutdowns but this should work with those as long change #1 to say "click start and put your cursor in the search/run box"
