Although i hate disagreeing with you, i have to.
And i'll explain why i think it's a bad idea.

Obviously we are talking about sorting on the left hand side of the market window. (Just to make it clear)

So, the client should sort by metalevel.
Means the client has to gather the data from the server for each item,
or have it hardcoded by name.
(CCP made an effort to make metalvls easily recognizeable by name, you remember ?)

The hardcoded version creates the least impact on the server, but is highly impractical.
Just look at the amount of namss and meta levels... that's madness.

Bothering the server isn't better either, because the client doesn't necessarily know
which of the items you have open categories for need to be sorted,
so he loads them all. Multiply that by a few hundred people, all at once in Jita alone.
Impractical.

That's just the technical aspect.

Now i'll ask again...

What argument is thers for having this, besides lazyness?

If the data has been coded into a database (PostgreSQL or MySQL for example) then it should already be sitting in some nice tables. The technical difference between sorting data by a primary key or secondary key (alphabetical or meta level, for example) should really be only one extra line of code. However, the extra load on the database server would still exist, as you pointed out, if the data is being presented by primary key initially and then "converted" to sorting by secondary key.

But again, if the UI was coded 'correctly' (for lack of a better term) the load would be the same, since all those people who have their settings set to display by meta level wouldn't require the server to present the table sorted by primary key. It just fetches the data by meta key instead.

Still, there would be some increase in server load, regardless. I can't say for sure how much of an increase since I'm not a DB coder (or coder of any description).

As to your question as to the (technical?) need for having this feature, other than laziness? Well, there isn't really one. It would just save having to click on each item in a list to look at the info to see the meta level (which also isn't always included) in order to work out whether the market price being asked for is reasonable, and whether the item is going to fit my needs. It's more of a suggestion to allow my cognitive process to follow an order I can understand, rather than having to jump around (which is not a natural way for thought process to occur).

Thanks for the response though, it was indeed insightful.

Okay, so, "you /can/ remember Meta Levels" is not really an argument against being able to sort items by meta level.

Problem is: EVE players already know metalevel and, in general modules attributes (beside often the meta is coded in the name itself); when browsing the market they already know what they're searching for, it's only a matter of experience.

So I think this this is felt like a required basic EVE know-how and an usless automatism for lazy people.

old players get used to but at begin its a big pain.
or there could be added an option from client side to see items by level in market window. However in that case ppl who play on lowest resolution will have not enough space on screen for that "feature".
