Definite +1

Great Idea, well though out.

As to the amounts, There have been both sides of the coin and think that the Comets should have 'infinite' resources. The limiting factor will be how many people you can field as well as how fast you can find them when they show up. The WILL de-spawn after a set amount of time so its a frenzy to extract as much as you can.

Also, explosions!

Think Armageddon the movie, as the comet moves closer to the sun the ice heats up and gas clouds are made. Gas clouds from Deepcore mining can damage your ship, why not have the same effect here? It should be possible to lose a Venture to gas clouds around one of these things.

The total Ice in the comet should reduce to zero in about 1/2 of its life time, so if you get to the comet late, no more ice but less dangerous gas clouds.

Planet ring's (and comets?) as mining sites containing moon materials were announced by ccp on fanfest 2012 if i remember correctly?

ccp should do this in some kind of fashion....more stuff in spac YAY!

Definitely an interesting idea which I'm largely in favor of. Here are a few of the things I like:

+ Appeases the veteran grav site scanners and gives them a challenge & keeps them engaged

+ Offers some security in return for scanning the site down and discovering the rare site to begin with

+ Offers great reward (thinking of the PI) but with risk of holding out until the comet is lost forever

+ Could be a neat way to randomly disperse gas deposits (thinking gas clouds around the comet) that currently only spawn in certain hot spot constellations

Drawback:

- The only drawback I see to this new feature is that it seems like a relatively complex addition or new feature to the game that would require a decent share of developer resources that will only end up being enjoyed by a small minority of the community.

Bottom Line: Awesome idea with plenty of merit but I think there are more "bang for the buck" features and fixes that the devs could be spending time on.

I like the idea, but Im not sure how it would really work out..

PI interface, so everyone planting stuff on the same comet? Who drills with what programs? How fast can people deplete this thing? Could someone potentially leech out the comet from underneath everyone else with shorter programs?

What does it yield? All suggested things at the same time or do you have to chose what to extract? If it yields minerals & ice woudlnt that just be detrimental for miners? Who would want to sit still and shoot rocks/iceblocks with lasers when you can just leave extractors on 2 week programs running on a comet?

If their lifetime is 2 weeks how do you determine at what point of its lifetime it is in when you find it? Would they be similar to wormholes in that regard?

The issue of what resources might be found on a particular comet is a question of game balance. I won't even attempt to balance this idea myself as I have a poor understanding of how resource availability affects New Eden.

Each extractor would extract only 1 type of resource at a time, just like in PI. This would essentially be PI on a comet instead of a planet, with different resources available for extraction. It could potentially require an "advanced PI" skill or something similar.

The lifetime of a comet is again a matter of game balance. I will say that my concept has the remaining lifetime of the comet being a hidden variable, since the uncertainty adds to the risk factor. There could be a similar system to wormholes where the description of the comet changes depending on what stage of it's life cycle it is in

e.g. "This comet is hurtling towards the local star" would indicate a new comet; "This comet is so close to the local star that ice deposits in the tail are beginning to melt" could indicate a middle point; "This comet is slowly receding from the local star" would indicate that it's on its way back into deep space.

There's a little astronomer inside of me??

+1 from me, and I really like the idea of having surface PI, trailing tail gas harvesting, mining of trailing rocks and ice etc. Best of all is that this utilizes all existing mechanisms. Even the PI is easy to manage, in code terms the comet is defined internally as a planet with a large amount of PI goods but no replenishment. Once the are extracted they are gone and it's up to the player to decide how much money to invest on extractors/factories that are ultimately going to disapper into the sunset(or just into the sun :D ).
