About Capsuleers

I've been wondering a lot of things about capsuleers lately. If anyone would like to talk about these things I'd be delighted.

1) What do we look like in the pod? Are we in our underwear? Naked?

2) How do we talk? In "The Jovian Wet Grave", the subject talked with thought. I'd imagine it would be more convenient to have a mouth cover/apparatus to also prevent drowning.

3) When we get out of the pod, do we take showers? When we step out and climb the ladder to our captains quarters, do we shower then put our clothes on? How does this work?

If anyone would like to ask any other questions about this topic that would be great.

Well in my opinion I'd say you'd be in a fluid that acts like an air itself like how a fetus' lungs are filled with amniotic fluid (though capsule fluid would let you breath through them). Also the fluid is likely non-adhesive like sort of lipophillic solution maybe, or maybe the solution that wets your clothing could dry off quickly as it maybe a small volatile compound under normal conditions. I also think pilots wear special suits that are non absorbent or is partially permeable and are designed to feel like its not their or act as a 2ed skin.

Or maybe you just go commando, I'd like that idea. I mean the fluid itself is meant to accompany the pilot's environment and should at least be comforting. Then again it is designed for jovians so maybe pilots do wear suits to adhere to the alien fluid, or maybe pilot clones have been modified to adapt to the jovian environment and could go commando. Also pilots probably use thought to control and communicate inside their vessel, that is if they're breathing through the fluid itself.

So pilots probably wear suits or go naked while breathing in the capsule liquid and is probably speaking through thought alone. Or some other random idea like from japanese mecha anime, neon genesis evangelion?

1) Naked. just look at the corpses which spawn when a player is podded. Buck-ass nude, so they are.

2) The pod fluid is oxygenated, meaning that it can be breathed... though it needs to be coughed back up on decanting, which can't be pleasant, or dignified. I daresay some capsuleers may prefer a breathing mask for that reason. Either way, communication is handled by the pod which can "take dictation" from the pilot's thoughts and render it either as text or as an accurate simulation of a 3D persona and transmit that, complete with voice - all of which may bear no relationship whatsoever to the pilot's actual appearance if they so wish.

(Noel - fetuses don't breathe amniotic fluid, they get their oxygen direct to the blood stream via the umbilical cord and placenta. Maybe pilots do something similar via their spinal sockets, that's an option too).

3) The gantry sprays the pilot with warm water then blasts them with hot air as part of the decanting process. By the time they're finished choking and coughing on the floor, they've already been rinsed and dried. Maybe still a little damp, but otherwise ready to get on with it. A pilot's clothing options are limited to those things that the stations universally lay on for them - when you select an outfit, that gets logged and attached to your pilot ID, and from that point forward, whenever you decant at a station, the quarters deliver a freshly laundered set to you, ready to put on. Which is why the mirror is so fancy.

I don't think I mentioned amniotic fluid was meant for breathing I was just thinking that's sort of how capsuleers are bathed in, exception is that capsule fluid you can breathe. But then the biggest problem is the oxygen partial pressure of the fluid in the lumen of the alveoli would need to be replaced with high oxygen partial pressure for it to cross the cellular barrier. I mean simple diffusion wouldn't cut it since the oxygen in the fluid outside of the body diffusing into the lungs would take too long. Unless the fluid itself has very little viscosity and could be quickly expelled and inhaled like real air. Then the fluid itself would be like air, just a little bit more dense. So then the fluid would need to have an atmospheric pressure, low viscosity (keeping a somewhat normal breathing) and also have around 21% oxygen.

Also I thought the sockets on the dorsal side was meant for direct neural inputs.

neural interface, going both ways. yes.

But there's no reason they couldn't do more than that.

Liquid ventilation, however, is a real thing, albeit still in prototyping. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ACQr0IZIb5I

In the chronicle: Jita 4-4, the capsuleer is described to be wearing a suit. However, the lore videos show differently. Also, in The Jovian WetGrave, the jovians literally stuck air tubes up the captains nose for him to breathe. When he opened his mouth, he literally choked on the fluid. Is it just me or is the lore conflicting itself?

I kinda want to ask a question similar pertaining to capsuleers. When a ship explodes are they ejected seconds before the imminent destruction or is it sort of some black box thing where the ship protects the capsuleer until the ship is finished exploding.

a little from column A, a little from column B. I think the pod's got enough shielding to protect the pilot while they're ejecting mid-explosion.

To be fair that was an early demonstration of an adapted prototype for military use.

Modern pods must have improved since then.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Capsule fluid is breathable. To give it its full technical name, we would technically call it an oxygen rich, nano-saturated breathable glucose based suspension solution.

Generally for simplicity's sake we call it Hydrostatic Fluid. It provides both oxygen and everything needed to keep you alive for extended periods in the capsule.

I've just finished putting together some stuff on the Capsule that will be released at a later date, so that's all I can say for now Smile. The whole workings of the egg, inside and out are included, so hopefully you guys will be able to read it soon™

I really do not want to know what happens when you defecate in your pod. Which probably is an unavoidable problem.

@CCP Falcon, Cant wait to read that, post it now !!! haha

@Sabriz, the way i always have thought about it is that being in the pod is like some sort of hibernation within relation to your body. Since you are only using your brain really to control things.
Since the fluid is some sort of nano fluid any waste could perhaps be broken down.
The way i like to think of it is that since your body is in some sort of stasis then bodily functions would be slowed down or perhaps stopped in some way.

Ive always assumed that the pod cleaned, dried, and clothed you while it was flying from the ship to the balcony. Thats why we so quickly appear fully clothed on the balcony upon docking. Also I remember that someone asked why we always had our same clothing no mater what we spent on it and no mater where we docked. A Dev said that they were going with having the clothes stored in the pod. With that assumption is makes sense that the pod uses nanites to disassemble our clothing when we enter the pod, and reassemble them on our bodies when we dock.

To accentuate this I think CCP should move the pod to the level of the balcony, placing it where the current undock button is. Also as part of the "eliminate loading bars" push, there could be, on docking, an animation of the pod flying to the balcony and the avatar stepping out and walking to within interaction range on the control panel. On docking the animation would be of the avatar walking over to the pod (cut short if its too far away) and the pod doors closing.

Gah, nanites are not scifi speak for "magic". They're a materials science, not clothing teleportation.

Maybe the devs are going with there being a small cargo compartment on the side of the pod and they just gloss over the whole decanting, showering and getting dressed process as being A) undignified and B) a needless waste of time.

My personal explanation would be that capsuleers have limited clothing options - namely the stuff that's available at character select and from the NeX store - and that when you dock your quarters deliver a freshly laundered set of your specified clothing to you to go with the complimentary Quafe.

I'd imagine the pod is very much like that scene in The Matrix when Neo wakes up.

Yes, I think that scene is a very good analogy to what a capsule decanting process looks like.
Clarification: Rinterra obviously meant the scene where Neo wakes up for the first time in the real world after taking the pill.

I have always thought the pod model in the CQ is too small. It is in essence a fully functioning space craft so power, propulsion, and FTL all need to fit within. There should also be a separate room for entering / exiting the life support section of the pod. That is were you would shower and there would be a locker equipped with a standard array of cloths or whatever you request upon docking. If the pod is actually bigger like i imagine it would be then there could be facilities within the pod for showering and changing.

As for life support within the pod i would imagine either a system of connectors similar to what you see in Matrix along the pilots back that would handle nutrition and oxygen or the fluid itself is life sustaining.
