CCP Redundancy and friends have been using the data retrieved with the automatic crash dump submission system we introduced recently

In this new dev blog, he tells us about the early results!

First? (That's a first! :)

Sounds like some good stuff. Keep up the great work.

I gather that in addition to the game becoming more stable, we will see improvements in speed as well as hidden coding glitches are found and fixed. Very interesting to see the Client improvements and optimizations that come from this tool especially in the graphics card realm.

Not sure why anyone would want to turn off crash reporting (hackers/botters not wanting CCP to see what they are running concurrently that may have crashed the client???)

Cheers!

I often DC without crashing on my end of the pipe. Chats and mods simply stop working and Showinfo requests do not load.
I have noticed something however, these "DC's" only happen when I'm in Hangar mode...

Is it me? :P

I can't be the only person to notice the Dev's CCP name in light of recent events.

Interesting blog though :)

Who are you and what have you done to he real CCP Devs? ;)

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

Yeah it's an unfortunately name to have right about now... but it's good to see the dev's tools expanding and being put to some good use.

Out of curiosity, how much of the red is part of the "tends to crash horribly on shutdown"?

Curiosity killed the Kata... ... but being immortal he wasn't too worried about keeping a count.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the quick blog and the graphs (yay graphs!). Really keeps up the communication and it's appreciated. Keep up the good work and hopefully some of those annoying DC's stop happening.

Keep us informed, this is stuff we don't normally hear about, yet affects us all and you guys deserve credit where it's due.

Woo, go CCP making me happy and informed.

while 2000 or even 500 crashes per day seems to be a lot, I wonder how many are from the same individual crashing 5-6 times (or more) and how many are "silent" crashes where EVE is shutting down anyway?

Also, the patch on the 25th seems to have significantly reduced crashes in raw numbers (or at least the crashes that this tool is able to capture)

what happened 10/18/2011 to cause such a huge increase?

Some observations from the data:

These problems seem to be hardware problems; assuming the huge increase is just a change of defaults.... are the bugs being seen really mostly attributed to hardware?

10/18 was when the automatic crash reporter was included in the 1.1.2 patch. I assume everything before that was manual crash reports.

CCP Guard / CCP Redundancy ... any chance your team can publish this graph periodically every month it would be a nice visibility to the progress of the endeavour.

Yes, lol that just shows how many crashes went unreported in the past... the spike is the real crashes that ee was suffering the whole time probably even worse, the trick is to watch from that day aforward to watch progress on patches.

Yay for results even if only minor so far (well you have only had a few days I guess) but as a well known supermarket says, every little helps.

Also +1 the proposal to make an update of this kind regular, maybe monthly is too much to ask but surely you could give us a quick update like this quarterly, so long as the more nervous management types can be persuaded to allow you to to show the spikes in crashs every 'expansion'. At the very least it'd be a semi-formalised time to put across any trends you continue to see, ie if users of certain outdated drivers are causing an abnormal number of crashes for themselves you could give a gentle poke to about itLol

Whilst I'm 'Management' I'm really not nervous about this as it's a great idea. Also, the guys are very keen to keep feeding this data out to people both as information and to make sure we keep working our way through the bugs.

Watch this space for details on how we will do this.
